Re: Challenge 895: The distillery
Thank you Loyd. Yea..I had a real thing about Jack Wild when I was much younger. I introduced my children to HR Pufnstuf but they didn't enjoy it as much as I did. However, my daughter bought me Freddy the Flute some years ago. She said I can visit Living island on my own now. ![]() ![]() ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West: I'm melting! Thanks Loyd. I thought it was quite difficult to think of an idea for this one. |

Ant I'm sorry to hear about your hand and hope surgery goes well. Just as a sideline, are you from Nordic descent? This condition is also known as "Vikings disease." - My husband and several of his cousins and their children are all affected by it. DNA testing confirmed they all have a significant amount of Nordic DNA. Not that it helps your situation, but it's interesting. Anyway, good luck with it all, Ant. Tooquilos, Yes having had it for a few years now, I had done some research and was aware of the Vikings connection however not been able to trace my family tree back much further than Sheffield about 1920 I am not sure how much Viking blood I really have. Although I am a bit apprehensive about not being able to use my hand for a few weeks, I am really pleased I have finally got a date to get at least one hand sorted. It was starting to be painful and apart from having a good excuse not to do the washing up, dropping things all the time was getting tiresome. |

Very interesting entries everybody. Good hope with the hand Ant. I did get carried away and still wanted to fit 5 more characters in there but there is only so much time...lol. Thanks Vibeke. I never knew I enjoyed steampunk so much and your photo stirred it up. Thanks so much. Thoroughly enjoyed working on it. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 895: The distillery
First to dismantle the distillery this week was GKB, setting the bar high with a glorious integration into the brass section. Inspired and beautifully achieved, Gordon. The Vangelis soundtrack for the animated version is completely appropriate, and it’s great that you found a 3D Tesla model so you could rebuild its engine. It could be that if you sheared the distillery vertically as it arises then it would appear to be in the correct perspective all the way up; but it might just look weird. I enjoyed lwc's spinning satellite, complete with its BBC news logo. The simulated rotation of the earth’s surface is surprisingly convincing, too. A splendid electrified Boris in the second entry, the added lightning, smoke and flashing lights really bringing this to life. Love the swivelling head! Extraordinary characters in the third entry - I assume these are indeed Twilight Zone actors, rather than disfigurements you’ve constructed. And yes, there is a definite air of Rod Serling to that distillery. There’s a tremendous steampunk aesthetic to the fourth entry, set off by that stone background. And, of course, the moose is making a very welcome return. Ingenious work from michael sinclair, integrating the distillery into a complex industrial scene while perfectly matching the perspective of the background. I like how the scene brightens as the lightning flashes. The rusting in the second entry ties it into the new background well; I like the pouring water and, especially, the slight wobble on the hoist. The curious assembly of machines in the third entry is entertaining, although the mix of perspectives is rather confusing. Not sure about the passing plane/spaceship, as its rigidly horizontal motion and aspect are very much at odds with the background angles. The dancing pipes in the fourth entry are fun. I don’t know who the misshapen man in the fifth entry is, but he works really well in that environment - and I like the integration of the steel toilet bowl. The man could really do with a reflection though. The Monster in the sixth entry certainly performs a neat flushing action. And the distillery is neatly buried in the massed pipework for the seventh entry, punctuated by the passing container ship. This is been an outstanding week for you, Michael - seven entries, and all on-topic! A glorious tribute to Louis Wain from Josephine Harvatt, with its plethora of kittens. I like the fact that the faces in each porthole are all different, or differently aligned. And that’s a terrific typographic arrangement on the front of the machine - is it your own design? A fun game design from Ant Snell, all the better for being displayed on an actual phone. The characters are nicely integrated into the scene, and I like the ad at the bottom. Two very small points: leave space for the camera, and make sure your background reaches right to the top of the screen. Really sorry to hear about your hand, Ant. I hope all goes well for the 27th. Fingers crossed - oh, no, you won’t be able to do that. A tremendous espresso machine from Vibeke, which looks like it tops it off with a cappuccino froth. An excellent choice of background, and I was really pleased at how well the perspective viewpoint of the distillery matches that of the mixing desk behind it. I have to say I don’t remember the TV show in tooquilos's entry, although I do of course recall the child star Jack Wild, who played the Artful Dodger in Oliver. Amazing how you’ve rebuilt and then deconstructed the distillery in the animated version, and I really like how you’ve integrated it into the program. I fear that theme tune may be stuck in my head for the weekend, though. I don’t know the mental process that took Mariner from a gin distillery to an ice cream machine in the Arabian desert, but I’m hugely impressed by the ability to turn the whole machine around to a different viewing angle, while just the shadow suggests its original shape. Extraordinary. I think Mr Lawrence and his chum are in danger of losing their ice creams, though. And seamless slotting into the industrial plant in the second entry. Great composition: is this the Suez canal? I’m intrigued at how dwindt has rebuilt the machine, taken it apart and repurposed it as traffic lights. That’s a great bit of steampunk design, too, with a huge cast of characters. So much detail! I’ve been staring at this for ages and not seen it all - nor spotted a single error. Glorious. ____________ A truly outstanding week on the Forum. Huge thanks, Vibeke, for the inspired starting image. |

Re: Challenge 895: The distillery
Thanks Steve. I really enjoyed this one although it was a lot of work. The closest motor cycle rider is made up from many pieces of the distillery. I also used the scuffed metal on the dog and the robot. It's hard to see on the robot because I placed a dirt map over it. The policeman's whistle is also from the distillery. I rendered each character individually and placed them into the scene; color corrected them and blended them into their place. This is where it all started. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |
