Thanks for the input David: in all fairness to me, I would say I was trying to make a difficult compromise between two lighting conditions: sunny and overcast, so it was never going to be perfect. The objective here was to make the foreground marry with the background, and therefore less obviously fake. I'm grateful to Vibeke for providing me (us) with an interesting conundrum 
PS would you like to have go yourself and show me how it's done. 
Meanwhile, I have provided another corrected version with the contrast increased, which, I hope, will provide the "benchmark" for such a difficult compromise.

Translucency of water is always difficult and I would be the last one to offer any critique or suggestions David, but I couldn't resist the temptation to throw some 'quickie' FX at your effort...

I hope you are feeling better after your bout of Covid. My image this week is a throwback to the TV program Crystal Maze which I believe was filmed on fort Boyard. Due to a fall in the TV ratings, the presenters (Dirty Den, Melinda Messenger, and some mad professor) along with a few contestants and the tigers that protect the crystals in the final game have all been abandoned in the fort. My image depicts them all making a dash for freedom as Steve’s tourist boat sails a little too close to the rocks. “The leaping tiger on the right had made it to a protruding tower of concrete (just out of shot) then leaps toward the boat as it approaches, fortunately, due to the undulations of the heavy seas he is likely to miss the boat and splash into the sea (there that should get me out of any prospective issues!) |

The Crystal Maze! I'd forgotten all about that! A really fun image. Michael your 'wave' of bathers is just marvellous. A pity it doesn't loop seamlessly, that would make it completely and utterly hypnotic. I can't even begin to imagine how you did it! Yes I did see the higher contrast comp. It does loop David.  I edited this you tube video as I only wanted the two second snatch of the bathers, and not the rest of the video. When I watch a MP4 video, I always have the choice of "Repeat" somewhere in the controls.
Anyway, go to the link/icon in my post and when you see the image/mp4 go to the top-hand corner USING your mouse (the mouse over the image will trigger options) and you will see three dots, then click on that a menu drops down where you can DOWNLOAD the MP4 and set it to loop or repeat on your media/video player. Ok, here is what you are supposed to see:

First to take to the sea this week was Born2Run, with a man carrying a shark standing on a leaping whale. Now that’s really jumping the shark. I’d photograph that too. Frank got it spot on with Fort Boyard, a stunning fortification built by Napoleon. Very neatly inserted, Frank. The aquarium in the second entry is an ingenious and hugely effective solution! Brilliant idea, perfectly executed. It’s Fort Boyard again from DavidMac, with an ingeniously extended scene - those extended railings are a great match. And you’re right - the fort would make a great secret lair for Mr Blofeld. I like the recurrence of last week’s challenge subject in the second entry - especially the neatly added water. Brilliant idea. An artfully constructed night scene in the third entry, although I’d have thought all those lights on Cap’n Sparrow’s ship would illuminate our passengers from the front, as much as the moon lights them from the side. The addition of 007 in the fourth entry is a nice addition, especially how he’s clinging to the railing with his right hand. The water man in the fifth entry very nearly works: strangely, it’s the water rising up from the sea that looks unconvincing, rather than the figure itself. I think if it had one arm raised it would look more dramatic, and give more opportunity for dripping water. The refraction is very neatly achieved. A fabulous spinning flying saucer from lwc, albeit with a curiously aliased edge. I do like those pulsating rays, though, especially the way they’ve been doubled up to be both background and foreground. And interesting how your second entry matches DavidMac’s - great minds, indeed! I like the water spray in the third entry; and the slight movement of the head of the woman in the middle adds a lot to the realism of the effect. I like your modification of DavidMac's entry - the dripping water adds a lot. The action is transported to Australia in Ben Boardman’s dramatic entry. A great shot, and I like the way you’ve added the roof to set it indoors. That’s also a clever way of extending the scene to the right - the added photographer neatly hides the missing edge of the chair. (Incidentally, the quad bike image a few weeks ago was taken in France, not Australia.) A novel extension from Mariner, rounding off the end of the boat with some very tastily drawn railings. The only way to make sure the photographers are pointing the right way. Very nicely done. I enjoyed the second entry, with its view of La Rochelle harbour at low tide - and that unexploded bomb sign is very neatly drawn at just legible angle. I seem to have put on weight, though! Good to see GKB back - and I see you’ve flooded Houston to allow these sightseers dangerously close to the launch pad. Except of course it didn’t happen - as you neatly explain in your second entry. They make a great pairing! If you’d asked me to make a list of things these people might be looking at, I don’t think I’d have come up with Vibeke's elephants playing football. Now that surely is worth getting the camera out for. Did this really happen? Overwhelming waves from michael sinclair; I’d like to see it taken a stage further, with the wave collapsing into ocean without the boat present. I like the foliage in your modification to vibeke's entry, which brings out the detail; but I preferred the deep black in her original. The second go at Vibeke’s entry is better, but I feel you’re overwhelming the viewer with detail: too much can distract from the message. What on earth is going on in the movie? Is that for real? Ant Snell is obviously a fan of the TV show, knowing that it always ends with tigers. Whether they like to swim, however, is doubtful. But this is an action-packed scene - just like the show! Incidentally, the Crystal Maze was filmed in a studio in West London; the show filmed in Fort Boyard with Dirty Den, Melinda Messenger etc was called… Fort Boyard. Yes I had already come to that conclusion myself but cant quite work out what's wrong with it. I made the flying saucer a few years ago with Xara 3D6, it was too small for this challenge, but I was too lazy to make a new one. Increasing it's size made for the ugly edges... thanks Steve. |
