HaHaHaHaaaaaaaaaa Well Loyd now it's my turn to laugh out loud. That caught me completely by surprise. It's hilarious. It's also very well done. Very clever. Re: Challenge 953: The roadworks cage
For the next two weeks as of this Friday the challenge will be blissfully DavidMac free. Ingrid has rented a villa in the Greek Islands and is bringing the family together to celebrate my eightieth birthday. Because we live in three different countries and with the Covid travel restrictions of the last years it will be the first time ever we have all been together in one place. Ten of us - three generations. I can be a patriarch! I will be able to look in here and follow from my iPad but for some reason it doesn't let me post (neither image nor text) - every attempt to do so gets me logged out. Never found out why, so can't correct it. So you can all breathe a sigh of relief ......... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 953: The roadworks cage
Last month our local council sent out two men to spray yellow paint around all the potholes on the street. Then last Wednesday they sent 4 men out to erect temporary traffic lights causing traffic disruption for two and a half days. I didn’t see who they sent on Friday but judging by the results I would guess they sent one short-sighted apprentice with a bucket of tarmac to fill the potholes. At least 2 of the carefully painted yellow highlighted holes were totally missed so I can only assume the traffic lights will return. Anyway this experience inspired this week’s challenge, If it works for pick your own strawberries, then why not try fill your own potholes? ![]() |

Re: Challenge 953: The roadworks cage
Five days in Mykonos with the whole family and five days in Athens just Ingrid and I. Although I have travelled most of Europe extensively these two will be first time for me. I am very excited. Because the house in Mykonos will be self catering we did some web research for nearby supermarkets. We discovered one that for orders over 150€ will deliver by boat to your yacht! ![]() Leave in one hour. ![]() ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 953: The roadworks cage
First to enter the roadworks this week was DavidMac, with an ingenious solution that avoided too much masking. And ingenuity is, after all, what HotChiPs is all about. Very neatly done, by the way, right down to the hooves. The spirit level entry was most entertaining – a great image of Loyd triumphant, and the slouched figure seems to be you. But what’s with the red paint on your shirt? Many congratulations on your significant birthday, David. I like how small Trump is in Frank's entry, and the neat editing of all the signs. a good pose, too, and the Prison sign cleverly gets around the fact that, presumably, the image of him you found had no legs. A dimly lit Boris from lwc, lit by a rather classy illuminated (and pulsating) Bedlam poster. Interesting, and the varying light works well. But when it’s that dark, shouldn’t the sky be black? Great distortion in the dog entry – love that twitching nose! The tentacle entry is glorious, with fabulous animation both on the squid thing and, especially, the man looking in from the right. Oh, and the onlookers behind, too! And I really enjoyed the image of David playing the button accordion. (As it happens I did play the accordion in one of our songs, at the beginning of Fairy Tale of New York.) A curious water main entry, with rather fine gushing water. Small point: since the woman’s head is out of focus, she could really do with a softer edge. I greatly enjoyed michael sinclair’s North Korean entry, with its entertaining marching army – in particular, I like how one of the women looks down with every step, which adds a lot of realism. Good shadow from the barrier, although the direction doesn’t match the shadow of the marchers (which is curiously cut off on the right). Fabulous work from Josephine Harvatt, with my pouce-pieds bursting out of the ground. The way the smoke leaks through the bars is particularly well thought out. A curious hole in the ground from tooquilos, very neatly blended into the scene. But what’s with the reaching hands? And the smashed-up car behind? The animated version gives us a ghoulish collection of missile-worshippers – what a bizarre scene! spectacular effects, Anna. I like Ant Snell’s innovative ‘fill your own potholes’ idea – and it does seem like a good solution. Of course it would have taken a lot of masking to put the man inside the cage. Straightened-up perspective and a very fine flooding scene from Mariner, both of which must have taken a significant amount of work. Curiously, though, the only thing that doesn’t seem to fit is the Road Closed sign, which appears to be at the wrong perspective. I see what you’ve done, matching the top to the angle of the building behind, but as it’s perpendicular to the windows I think that’s the wrong approach. ______ An interesting debate on the curious perspective of the original photo. The image wasn’t cropped, so unfortunately I can’t supply you with a pulled-back version. But as Loyd suggests, and as David demonstrates, I must indeed have been pointing the camera down slightly, which is what would account for the curious distortion on the buildings. |
