Re: Challenge 960: On the canal
Thanks David. It was a long job finding substitutes on the net for this rather dreary starting image and then making them fit well. I must have put in about forty hours work, but loved it. As pubs go, The Malt House looks classier than average. The sort of place that Steve might want to take his mother-in-law to impress her! Right Steve? |

Thanks Gordon. Nice to see you are still producing superb animations. |

Excellent work everybody I particularly liked Loyd's fireworks, and Gordon's two entries. ![]() I have otherwise been preoccupied with the exigencies of life and have not had the time this week to do more; moreover, the Sqirtlz water filter (0.1 speed) is in conflict with my other animations, and therefore I've had to slow down the water motion to make my accordion player more acceptable ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 960: On the canal
First to trawl the canal this week was Frank, reconstructing a scene from Peaky Blinders. Beautifully integrated into the canal, the fog adding a lot of atmosphere. My only issue is the strong directional shadows, which you’d only see in bright sunlight. Peaky Blinders again from lwc, in a subtle animation: that slight nod of the head adds a lot of emotion to the scene. It’s an extraordinary TV show, Loyd, and well worth watching. I like the cyanotype version, although I do have an issue with the placement of the four women. Eyelines on the horizon! ![]() I did enjoy the rainy entry, with its somewhat out of character scrolling advertising banner. Lots of good movement here. A fun jetski entry, with the hovering drone. An interesting flooded entry, too, with its upturned boat and car. You’ve got the wobble on the hovering helicopter just right. And the steampunk submarine entry is very cute. The fireworks entry has some good reflections on the roof and water. Good composition from DavidMac, and lighting that cigarette must have been a challenge. I like the glow on the hands especially. The two men with machine guns look like they’re relieving themselves in the bushes. And the fog entry certainly is realistic – although shouldn’t the smoke be opaque? I think the spotlight entry is my favourite, with its subtle lighting. And the final entry is truly captivating: high drama here, indeed. Now go and watch all five series. Splendid destruction from tooquilos, and an interesting example of putting AI to good use. I enjoyed the hand crafted entry, although that narrow boat looks like it’s heading for a crash. But watch your perspective: from this far away, the boat would appear a much more uniform size: ![]() A funny animated entry linking the two images – very entertaining! Still trying to understand the choice of the Abba soundtrack. I like michael sinclair’s repurposing of the canal bridge, and the shimmering water. A very good architectural match. But you’ve made a schoolboy error with that reflection: take another look at the buildings on the right hand side: ![]() I enjoyed the accordion entry, although the man reading the newspaper seems unimpressed. It’s Wind in the Willows time for Ben Boardman, with Badger, Ratty and Mole in the foreground. And there’s Toad dressed as the washerwoman! A huge amount of detail in here, really well put together. Good stuff! A real technical tour de force from GKB, in opening that bridge. A perfect angle on the cruiser, although it is perhaps a bit small in that location – compare the height of the handrail on the boat with the handrail on the bridge. Interesting that you managed the animated version without building a 3D model of the bridge – there is a little awkwardness to the movement – but I do like how the cruiser passes beneath it. Very well judged. And the flock of ducks is very cute: I like the way the camera pulls back in the animated version of that one, and the fact that each duck moves independently. The new boat in Mariner's entry fits neatly alongside the canal, and the haze adds a sense of depth – the people on the bridge adding a useful human element. But bringing the sun out is a remarkable achievement: the added shadows complete the recolouring. Extraordinary work. There’s real drama in the floating corpse entry, although there’s something not quite about the body. Does it need some ripples? A slight reflection? Can’t put my finger on it. Good work, everyone. |

I wish I knew! I am never sure about this one Steve and I've fallen foul of it before. I think it depends on quality and quantity. I did first add it fully opaque in the centre with reduced opacity just at the edges. That would seem to be the correct approach but it 'popped' too much and looked added. Somehow it seemed more 'comfortable' when I reduced the opacity overall a bit.
My favourites too. The final looks so simple and I thought it would be but, to my surprise, it was no end of trouble to get right. Glad you liked them.
I am going looking for them later today. Thank Steve. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Steve. Fun challenge.
That's right, Steve. The body needs ripples, and parts of it should be sunk beneath the surface. It was a quickie. |

Re: Challenge 960: On the canal
Thanks Steve, you're right, I based some light shadows based on the original image but when adding the fog I cut them back, should rather have eliminated them instead. Note: I truly enjoyed the Peaky Blinders series.Great series.Watched it on Netflix. |
