You're really into the movies this time Loyd. Cute image.

Now that is fast Gordon, and seriously impressive!

I was sure you would recognise the origins and spot the name-play.

Thought I would add a little info about the aircraft that this illustration was based on. Did someone say nerd?

The very real aircraft that this image was based on is a German flying boat dating to 1929, the Dornier Do X. Only three were actually built, with the 2nd and 3rd going to Italy. That it had so many engines was because of the lack of more powerful engines. Germany, at that time, had no engines that could be used so licence built British Bristol Jupiter engines were used. Even those could barely lift the aircraft and were replaced with more powerful American Curtiss V-1570 Conqueror engines. The aircraft was retired from service in 1937.

The Cyrillic lettering on the image is spurious with some of the letters being Roman lettering and not Cyrillic. The letter ‘D’ should actually be ‘Д’ in Cyrillic. The ‘ Ф’ is actually an ‘F’, not an ‘O’. The whole word is completely meaningless. Russia never had anything to do with the Do X.

On the nose of my version reads как обмануть в фотошопе - ‘How To Cheat in Photoshop’.

Interesting Gordon.

I can't even imagine the amount of time and money that was spent making this amazing radio-controlled version.

Well of course it didn't Gordon! My whole entry was a persiflage, as silly and fictitious as my ridiculous rebuild of the plane itself.

You appear to be taking it a just wee bit too much at face value ....... I'm really surprised. I thought with your pronounced humour you would be the first to spot a jape.

The name, by the way, is comprised of something known as Faux Cyrillic. It's a fake, joke typeface made to look 'Russian' but be readable to anyone. It's as nonsensical as my invention of the name Dornievski.

I had prepared a proper history and photographs which I was going to post at the end of the week with Steve's comments.

Yes. What a labour of love! Just fantastic.

I came a cross a number of these in my researches. Pity they all have wheels when the original was a flying boat. I wonder if a 'true' model could land and take off from water. I have no idea if the physics involved would scale. Often it doesn't with models.

Now the cat is out of the bag I suspect there are a few other grown up children like myself here who might enjoy this cutaway of the Dornier (and a few others). I never knew there was a tunnel through the wing with doors in the engine support columns to give engine access!!

What Loyd said. That's a really elegant image Frank! I would guess a lot more gone into it than first meets the eye.

Thank you Loyd and David.
David, surprisingly not too much, added an aircraft, parts of our Friday Challenge, some cleaning up, color grading, lighting and forgive me a small additive touch of Generative Fill.

Re: Challenge 1016: The wind van
First to fire up the propeller this week was lwc, with an extraordinary catamaran, whose diesel smoke is certainly choking the waterskier behind. Is that me at the helm? Splendid. I enjoyed the Fireball XL5 prototype, and as ever with your animations it’s always the tiny details that bring it to life – in this case, the jet of steam. Clockwise. Definitely clockwise. The wind machine entry is terrific, with (I assume) Gary Cooper, although that’s not High Noon. The sway on the cowboys is perfect. I like the water ripples in the sailboat entry, with the slight movement of the boats. And after Gary, it has to be Clint, complete with dolly zoom effect. All together now: oo-e-oo-e-ooo… The miniature set is a great view, with the blowing hair really making it. Not sure about the strong blue cast to the propeller, though. The Godzilla entry is outstanding, with so many animated elements. Beautifully done, you can almost feel the spray on your face. And the Disney World entry looks like Gordon has had a hand in it. Quite a dogfight.

I’m guessing DavidMac's mystery cameraman is none other than DavidMac, who must have an extraordinarily tight crop to miss out the crane. For all the propeller’s spin, though, it doesn’t seem to be blowing her off vertical. I like the exuberant Killah Jules entry, not least for its almost unbearably cute village green (and they’re even playing cricket on it). Does her pose make her look a little constipated, do you think? A similarly charming aerial view in the caravan entry, with its KLM branding and the pilot at the controls. I like that we can see the drone operator in front of the windmill. I enjoyed the fantasy that is the Dornievski, with its 24 propellers: and the best thing for me here (you know I love detail) is that the propellers are at different degrees of spin. And as predicted I spent far too long gazing a the cutaway – I hadn’t appreciated just how huge that thing was.

A green propeller from tooquilos, featuring Killah Jules and her (naturally) green van. A bit of a contrast boost needed on her costume there!

A propeller from michael sinclair, even though it’s the wrong propeller but hey, I can’t ask for too much. I like the whimsical car. Only thing that bothers me here is the lighting on the hub – surely the shadows shouldn’t rotate with the blades?

Is that a lovingly rebuilt Fireball XL5 from GKB? Or is it one found online, of which I’m sure there are dozens? From the animated version I’m guessing so, as I think most of the effort this week went into the stuttering engine startup (excellent soundtrack) and the launch rail construction. Fun! And has David spurred you to model a Dornievski of your own? Glorious seeing his image realised in 3D like this! And so fast. I hadn’t spotted the как обмануть в фотошопе on the nose.

An immaculate composite from Frank, with an almost seamless montage – a touch more contrast inside the propeller would have matched the shadows in the engine perfectly. I’m guessing this was taken in the days before health and safety. Not sure about the subtle colouring, though. The plane crash entry is a beautiful, haunting piece of work, with subtle placement of the propeller. And that’s a terrific jet blast, but what’s it blasting through? It looks like a whale’s jawbones.

Glad you’ve had fun while I’ve been away.

Yes. 'Tis me. Good point about the wind.

Killah Jules. Does her pose make her look a little constipated, do you think?

Oh Steve! Now you've said it, I can't un-see it!

It was the only picture I could find that wasn't taken at eye level when I needed at least a hint of looking down. She was semi squatting in the photo and I straightened her out a bit.

I like that we can see the drone operator in front of the windmill.

I'd love to take credit for that but, truth is, he's a happy accident.

The minute the engines were in place it was obvious I was going to have to do that. For a moment I was tempted to be lazy and blame poor soviet re-touchers.

I knew you would like the cutaway. The wing tunnel and hollow engine support columns for in flight servicing is what got me! In flight servicing!! Never heard of that before.

Excellent image of the DC3. Love it. I ought to try that kind of thing myself when the opportunity presents.

Steve
The Fireball XL5 was, indeed, a model that I obtained some years ago. The launch scene was cribbed from a video I made at the time with an extra scene for the engine start-up.

Good work from everyone and thanks to David for his excellent spoof.

My own version of his spoof was also based on a model of the Dornier Do X.

Forgot to say, I hope you had a relaxing time in your mini-maison à La Rochelle and a successful time searching for curieaux inspirations and components.

Actually it's James 'Jimmy' Stewart... but we won't quibble over that.

I was overwhelmed with crazy ideas for this one, a fun challenge for me... many thanks Steve!
