Re: Challenge 1100: The San Francisco Earthquake
There have been some really good entries this week which I wouldn’t like to have attempted. I found this one very tricky. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1100: The San Francisco Earthquake
First to attempt to reconstruct San Francisco this week was lwc, with a nicely recoloured view of the building. I like the vintage look. Curious why the building on the left has been turned into brick. A neatly straightened building from GKB, an image in which the single most complex task must have been erasing and then reinstating all those wires. Great job, Gordon. A beautiful rebuild from Ben Boardman, with tremendous attention to detail: even the pillars holding up the porches have been reinstated. I’ve been going back and forth comparing this with the original and frankly, Ben, I’ve no idea how you did it. A truly astonishing piece of work. A cheeky cheat from tooquilos, using altogether different buildings - but from the same angle. Rotate Object tool, eh? It really is very good. I like the huge chasm in front of them. I like the old movie style of the animated version, very cute. And your image fits neatly into the newspaper front page. Hilarious architecture from Ant Snell with comedy face houses. I assume these are real buildings somewhere? I like the detail of the eyes in the windows of the straightened house, but there does seem to be some serious subsidence in the corner. Adding your own telegraph wires was a good idea. I can’t get vibeke’s entry to load. Can anyone else see it? I see Frank has brought the whole street back to life, and those added pedestrians and car do make a big difference. The straightened building works well, although there’s still a slight lilt on the right. Perhaps that’s just subsidence? Imaginative work from DavidMac, with the front of the building toppling off – a terrifying stunt even for Buster Keaton. I agree, this would have been almost impossible without the Rotate Object tool. An expertly constructed back half of the building, too. Although I don’t see how the angle of the remaining side wall matches that of the falling building. I was wondering how Mariner would approach this Challenge, and I’m pleased to see this expert reconstruction. All sourced from similar buildings and then pieced together, Frankenstein-like? Gosh. So much detail. The added fences and gates work well, as does the shadow of the telegraph pole. A couple of points: the buildings all appear somewhat monochrome, despite the tinted windows; the car in front should surely be higher in the frame, given that the viewer appears to be on the same eye level as the people across the street; and that purple dress screams out! But then I know you like bright colours in your clothing. I have a vision of you sitting in front of your computer wearing dayglo shirt and trousers. Am I right in thinking that dwindt has created a 3D model rebuild of the entire street? Wow. That’s real dedication. It’s beautiful. I like the colour version, too, and it is curious about the shadows. Excellent work from everyone this week. It was a really tricky Challenge. |

Thank you Steve. No, not a 3D scene. Maybe I should have used the word montage rather than rebuild. I extracted the items I recognized and rebuilt the street with the cutout sections from the photo. Once completed, I ran it through ai for the color image. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 1100: The San Francisco Earthquake
Thanks Steve. I would have liked to have spent more time restoring the rest of the buildings but I just didn’t have the time. I won’t be around for the next month or so as I have a lot going on including a two-week trip to the Caucasus. I hope that I might have time to rebuild the Pedoscope, though. I was most impressed by everyone’s work this week; a particularly complex subject. _________________ Why is it that all the contestants in the ‘Miss Universe’ contest are all from Earth? |

Thanks Steve, I really put some time into this one. It was great.
The viewer is supposed to be on the same eye level as the people across the street, but I struggled with this very point.
I know. See my comment to David.
Steve, I only made her dress that colour to provoke you. |

Me neither. “File not found 401”
Yes, but the rotate tool’s results can be a bit smudgy. I haven’t been able to find any info on recommended resolutions. The back half was much harder than I expected. I thought it would easy to find something but in the end I had to put together a lot of very disparate bits and pieces.
Oh Steve! Missing pieces have broken off from the side wall and fallen down behind the front where they are no longer visible. To help us keep the quality of our responses high, please tell us what you think. Rate this excuse from: 0) Utter Bullshit. 1) Unconvincing. 2) Plausible. 3) Needs Improvement 4) Good. 5) Of course! How could I have missed that? Thank you Steve. A challenging week. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1100: The San Francisco Earthquake
Hi Steve I just google lensed for similar building in San Francisco. The collapsed ones were never rebuilt as they were in a liquification zone. Just cut & paste, I cant find the main one I used but it was similar to these. These are The Painted Ladies I enjoyed the challenge - a lot more work than I thought it would be. Thank you Steve |

I have no idea, guess it was something the AI colorizer did... I didn't notice until you commented. Thanks! |

Well now it's finally shown up, it was worth the wait! Very nicely done. I like the way you have put them on a classic San Fransiscan sloping street. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

That’s absolutely brilliant! What an ingenious solution! By the way there’s an ongoing glitch in the forum software where posts don’t show up till you reload the page. |

Thank you Steve and David. I'm glad it finally shows. I could always see it on my computer, and then I was in a place with very bad internet, hence so many reposts. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |
