Highly convincing work from LonnieK... A self portrait, perhaps?

Thanks Steve. Now that you mention it, there is a resemblance to my avatar, but alas, no. A search for 'old man' produced this portrait - 'Old man from Tajikistan' - by photographer Steve Evans from India and USA. The facial features were close enough to be liquified to fit Leo's sketch nicely.

Re: Challenge 335: Developing Da Vinci
Thanks again Steve.

Well more Darwin-esk as Anna noticed!

I understand the "squint" question, but in my view the original did too as he focused close on his subject, himself in a mirror? (small image and mirror)
"When your pupils are directed at, say, this page, the eyes turn slightly inwards as you bring the page closer to your face so that your gaze can converge on a word."- NS.

Yes the second contribution did go back to basics, 4 earth chalks and some paper. Its very quick though and much cheaper, inspirational and lighter (not really the case sometimes with the cost of some artist materials). Certainly very rough sketch, sorry, only ~ 7mins.

I love PS, as you know, but try not to forget when and where to use the other tools and techniques, or more important put them together.

Have a great weekend all, and look forward to your next entries,
Trevor

Re: Challenge 335: Developing Da Vinci
Interesting work from Luis, whose photographic figure is a good likeness. Would it have been possible to distort the eyes and nose to match Leonardo's exactly? The only thing that bothers me here is the very 20th Century cap, which seems a little at odds with the period. What sort of hat would Da Vinci have worn?

Thanks for the comments Steve. I probably could have distorted the eyes and nose but did not think of it at the time. I was busy trying to find long gray hair.

The position of the image in the background is a little awkward, seeming to be looming over him:

Thanks Steve. In my haste, I didn't notice the bad positioning of the image behind. The woman is looking down on Leonardo with a definite hint of mirth.

More Hemingway than Da Vinci from Eva Roth, with a mottled skin texture overlaid on the line drawing, and a wholly new beard. Do you think he really was bald? Or did he just get bored with drawing his own hair? Two things: the texture on the head needs to wrap around the head (try spherizing a copy of it); and the angle of your horizon is making me seasick!

Thanks a lot for your comments Steve. Will try spherising parts of the head and take him off that shaky boat.
Looking at the original drawing I thought it already looked like an old person's mottled skin texture, so all I did was getting more contrast to the drawing, softening some of the lines (median filter) and then colouring it in.
And yes, bold or not he would surely have got bored of drawing his hair.

First to bring Leonardo to life was GKB, with recoloured skin, new eyes and mouth, and a rather splendid crop of hair. The hair is, perhaps, a little too shampoo-shiny, and is certainly rather on the feminine side; it does make Leo look a little camp, I think. But it certainly showed everyone that the Challenge was indeed possible! And the second entry showed that there's more than one way to skin a helicopter.

Thanks Steve. Just reading this in the middle of the Namibian Desert

I take your point about the hair but, if I remember correctly, our Leo was a touch on the camp side so perhaps it's not so far out after all

Next contact should be from the middle of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
