Re: Challenge 438: The Ford Escort
Thanks again Steve,

I was waiting for this... !
>"But - please not Times Roman! Come on, you can find a typeface more appropriate than that!" Maybe I work in standards documents too long ..., but small excuse. I did have second idea, but had no time to finish with graphic fonts I was going to experiment with.....

What would your suggestion(s) be?
I've read your Art & Design book (recommend), and fascinated with the subtlety ... something I'm not very fresh with. Should try harder

'A clever montage from Vibeke, showing the Escort replacing a broken old Ford Cortina. I like the transition from doom-laden, cloudy suburbia to a tropical beach, and the cheery family - and a perfect choice of typeface. The only thing that bothers me is the way the family is cut off at the bottom: could they have been faded away, perhaps? '

Thanks Steve, The photo of the old car and the family are my own from 1969.

Trevor, Maybe we should have a Typography based Challenge?.
I think typography is one of the toughest things to get right and can make or destroy an image. I've spent hours in the past trying to decide where on the page to place a single word, and still not been happy!
I have books on Swiss Typography but it's not my strong point.

If in doubt use "Helvetica" (or at least a suitable Free alternative!)

I like the feel of Whaler's entry, with the car lit by a distant volcano. Great shine on the windows, well lit headlights. I'd really get rid of that fence on the right, though, since it draws attention away from the car and doesn't really serve any useful purpose. Good to see Ford are now fitting their cars with ultra heat-resistant tyres, and especially good to see the rear view mirror coming back in the second entry.

Thanks, Steve, I knew you would spot themissing rear view mirror. I don't know how you found out, but the easy way would of course be to put the two images on top of each other in PS and set the blending mode to difference for the top layer.
About the fence; the only reason I left it where it was is because I decided I didn't want to spend any time removing the reflection on the hood. Maybe should have charred it instead, considering the environment!

Thanks for the great critiques of our work, Steve. I appreciate the good and the bad you point out. Very helpful. More teachers could be like this.

Yes good idea Artwel! But I'm not sure I get it yet, but know when it is wrong, inappropriate and when someone gets it right.

(Just fyi: For my bias excuse: I have to document international technical documents. Have to use document templates including approved limited fonts (MS Word, Excel, etc). They will not get approved if not comply. I'm guilty in that peer approval process, but in that context standard v.important. They carry the name of international standard authority or company approving them ..... a long story...).

I'm not sure how Steve could make it part of an FC (?), but would love to have the chance to breakaway from standards with creative Typographical challenges. Either-way, FC is creative by all, and Steve's Art & Design in PS an eye opener for me!

Cheers, Trevor P

Thank you Steve. I agonised over the size of the car quite a bit..in the end I settled for this knowing that it wasnt quite right.
