My point was that you don't always need to make the base image black and white first - setting the Adjustment Layer to Luminosity does the trick, and it's useful if you want to retain the original colours.

Did a quick play with Luminosity. If you start from monochrome you get metal. If you start from colour it works beautifully - but you don't really get metal. You get a finish more like a metallic car paint or coloured pearl. It's actually rather beautiful and a very useful technique to know.
