Re: Challenge 821: The wash basin
First to install the basin this week was DavidMac, with a nod back to an early contest featuring Lady Chatterley. Excellent side lighting on the chair - but that extreme perspective could only be seen in an object much closer to the camera. The royal corgi bowl in the second entry is beautifully done, but watch your shadows: take a look at the shadows of the columns, which are all coming directly away from the high windows. A beautiful splash in the third entry (you really have been busy, haven’t you) but the positioning of the hands suggests that the water will never actually hit the bowl. Also, isn’t it a little… yellow… A fabulous fourth entry, with its array of mixing containers. I like the subtle variation in viewpoint of all the tanks, and the basin right at the bottom. Splendid. A return to form from Ben Mills, who has detached the basin and turned it into a rather fine copper bath. She does fit remarkably well, too. I’m sure she must be wearing a bikini under all those bubbles. A terrific animation from lwc, with flowing water, butterflies and a truly realistic bird. What are those rectangular objects dotted around, though? A nicely constructed second entry, in Gordon’s trademark infrared style, with very fine birds. I like the water running into the bowl, but is that really how it would run out of it? I think there may be rather too much water in the third entry, though. The way the water spills out in the fourth entry is much more realistic, and very nicely achieved. My only issue with it is that there’s much more water going into the bowl than coming out of it. I love all the birds in the fifth entry. A splendid setting from Josephine Harvatt, the bowl perfectly integrated into the scene. Well, almost perfectly; the top of the stand needs to be slanted more to match the perspective of the room: ![]() A tantalisingly slow drip from Michael Sinclair, albeit from a slightly dodgy cutout tap. But “tatty, seedy and grotty”? Really? You don’t see the beauty in this object? A good second entry, with more water. A surprisingly realistic effect, given there are so few frames. But you do yourself no favours by making the image so large; shrink it down, and it will be much more impressive. I like the background location in tooquilos's entry, although I’m a little perplexed by the fact that the basin appears to be located on the outside of the building, rather than inside. Maybe a dash of whitewash on those stone walls? The copper pipes at the top are a nice touch. Beautiful pipework in the animated version, and - good lord, have you made a 3D model of that bowl just so you could slide it in? Tremendous modelling skills. And I really enjoyed seeing your source material at the end. A topical entry from Ant Snell, and a striking satirical statement. A couple of small technical points: sawing off one leg of the “hand sanitiser” stand doesn’t really fix the perspective problem! And it would be much stronger if you brought the nurse nearest to us up a little, so her eyes are on the same line as the other one. An astonishing progressive from Mariner, first reproducing Mary Cassatt’s drawing of Degas’ painting, then adding texture and the basin to it before making it even more realistic. Absolutely ingenious: the delicate shading in the final version is beautifully achieved, although I suspect you used a photograph for the hand. Plenty of gushing water from JimH - I’m surprised the tap can cope! If that vulture is waiting for the gardener to die of thirst, though, I reckon it’s out of luck. Perfect integration into the room from Vibeke, the added child and dogs really bringing the scene to life. Beautifully achieved, Vibeke; just a minor perspective adjustment needed on the chair: ![]() |

Thank you Steve. It was all great fun. Yes I did use a photograph for the hand. They are so difficult to paint, aren't they? |

All fair criticisms Steve, and all down to laziness and inattention. Truth to tell the high output this week was not enthusiasm but a complete inability to get to grips with the subject. So each unsatisfactory attempt got followed by another. The wise thing to do would have been not to post. It wasn't until I got the last idea that I found something that really challenged and engaged me ...... and it shows. Thanks Steve. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I don't think four entries can be termed laziness! |

Well done everybody. Steve's comments at the end are the ultimate weeks treat. What a good eye for detail. It's when each individuals work is appreciated more...and one realises how much detail they miss the first time they looked. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Thanks Steve. The little rectangles are name tags for each different type of plant, I should have removed them. |

Thank you Steve, I knew I hadn't got the perspective right. I need to work at that. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 821: The wash basin
Thank you Steve. The reason the bowl is outside the house is during these days of Covid, particularly here in Australia, we are required to wash or sanitise our hands prior to entering a shop or building. Initially I had other plans for the bowl but they didn't quite work out the way I had imagined but by that stage I had rebuilt the back and made the bowl so I ended up using what I had done, even though it served no real purpose. _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |
