THE STEVE CAPLIN TECHNIQUE Using my CS3 "cookbook" I followed Steve's instructions from the section philosopher's stone for the marble I used Overlay POSTSCRIPT If all of you were to take a look at Steve's step-by step instructions, you would make some definite improvements. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

As many said before me, this is difficult. Not at all happy, but I will upload now as I'm about to get on the road and head home after a lovely week in Kaikoura with the family. ![]() _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
First to carve Mount Rushmore this week was GKB, a good view of Biden from below. The lighting isn’t quite stony enough, although it looks like there’s a good texture there. And there’s a reason none of the existing statues have ears - too difficult to carve. It’s better in the second entry, but - a feathered edge on the left? Not in stone, you don’t. So typical of michael sinclair to ignore the instructions, even when it’s the Challenge he devised. And there he is replacing Lincoln. A fine Sarah Palin in the second entry, though, complete with cheesy grin. Great stony hair. I like the third entry, but perhaps there’s a rather too marked line on the left. It could be the rock face should creep in here a little more. An interesting approach in the fourth entry, with a good stone texture - but there shadows need work. Obama works very well in the fifth entry, with good texture. Again, I’d lose the over-detailed ear. I suppose it was only a matter of time before Napoleon popped up in the sixth entry. A good stone treatment, but much too detailed for Mount Rushmore. The seventh entry is not as convincing as the previous one, I think. But I’m glad the technique in HotChiPs was useful for the eighth entry. Eight entries, and still no Biden! Top marks to DavidMac for a splendid entry. The texture, toning and shading are very fine. It’s great that you managed to retain so much of the detail of Biden’s face in here, but perhaps a little too much detail: the other carved figures are more definitely chiselled. Ears? A fine second entry, making full use of Trump’s curious Black Panther salute. Of course, you lose marks for including Trump at all. “How many shades of grey can there be?” asks Josephine Harvatt. And of course, the rock isn’t really grey, it’s more of a creamy colour. Turning an image to monochrome always looks to blue when set against stone. A good angle, through. I like the more chiselled appearance in the second entry. A profile view from Ben Mills, making good use of the existing shadow direction. He fits surprisingly well down there, but I do have to question his bright yellow colour. Jaundice? Not enough vegetables? Also a distinct absence of bikinis. An aerial view from Mariner, with a strong shadow on Biden matching that of Washington next door. That looks like a handmade suit - but shouldn’t it have some texture too? The divide between the collar and the neck is very marked. And maybe darken the whole thing. I know your main passion is restoration, but I never thought you’d be able to remove the heads entirely, as you have in the second entry. Very fine work - and I like the tiny teepees and totem pole. Very restrained, giving a real sense of scale. It looks like tooquilos has gone native American on us, with an ingenious carving that looks much older than the other heads. The animated version has gone all Star Trek. I like the 3D Enterprise, and it turns out it’s not a native American but a 3D Spock, who ingeniously rotates in the stone. Amazing! And good transporter and warp drive effects. Great sounds, too. A flurry of world leaders from lwc: Napoleon’s hat would really take some carving. I like the treatment of Churchill. And those birds do add a sense of realism. Good to see the guest moose in the second entry! And the horse in the third entry is excellent - but who’s that on the mountain? Is it Biden? I enjoyed the fourth entry. Very appropriate. And a cute fifth entry, featuring Herman from the Munsters. An interesting approach from dwindt, showing a lot of suit. Some good shading here, and I like the texture. But should the tie be a different colour to the shirt? If so, how could that be carved? “Version 8 and still rubbish,” says JimH - but you’re being too hard on yourself. It was a very tricky Challenge, and your Biden first well in there; just a little more contrast required. Also, I’m not sure that angle of view makes for the easiest match with the existing faces. A good view from Vibeke, but as you discovered it’s incredibly hard to get the colours to match. Perhaps Biden could go a little bigger, too? _______ This was a seriously difficult Challenge, and well done to all who attempted it. Thanks also to Michael for the idea, even if he failed to follow the instructions. I’ve had a go at this one myself. In my attempt to make the carving match the originals I’m not sure it still looks enough like Biden. Feel free to criticise. ![]() |

I think that is quite a good effort, Steve. You could have made the sky a bit more blue. Like I do. |

Re: Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
Thank you Steve. This was surprisingly difficult. Interesting to see what you have done Steve. The lighting match especially eye shadows is really spot on. You have managed to get a few sharp edges in there, like the eyebrows, but he still looks just a tad smooth and not quite chiselled enough to my eye. This is what I was completely unable to resolve in my own effort. OK. Time for me to un-swap the judges wig and go back to being a plaintive. Thank you Michael for a very challenging challenge. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
Steve - Your "third entry" link is actually for the second not the third... on the mountain is Crazy Horse. The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument under construction on privately held land in the Black Hills, in Custer County, South Dakota, United States. It will depict the Oglala Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, riding a horse and pointing to his tribal land.] The Monument is located 17 miles from Mt. Rushmore, it has been under construction for more than 70 years, and will likely never be completely finished. A search for Crazy Horse Monument should provide more information. Thanks! |

Thanks Steve.; as you said a difficult one to get right. That said there is no excuse for a feathered edge. _________________ Always remember that you are unique - just like everyone else. |

Re: Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
Thanks Steve. Biden is recreated from many pieces of rock of the mountain. I should have toned his the left shirt portion down a bit and I ran his shadow straight across his shirt collar, which was silly. I should have moved it down over the shirt more. The shirt was the bright portion of Washington's lapel, elongated. He has Lincoln's eyes, flipped and manipulated, portion of his top lip and his cheek crease. Washinton's chin etc, etc. The tie pattern is the rockface under Washington, skewed a little. Roosevelt's right fringe (bangs) turned counter clockwise 90 degrees made Biden's right temple hair. Washington's ear. If you study Biden, you'll recognise some of the small parts I have pinched from the rest of the image. A difficult but interesting challenge. I'm impressed with your recreation. Well done. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |
