Ha Mariner, I made one in 'real-time' but it was too boring to watch more than fifteen seconds or so... sixty seconds can be a very long time, that's why I went with a 'time-lapse'.

Re: Challenge 959: The Midas touch
First to de-gold the statue this week was DavidMac, with a glorious version in glass. Good attention to detail here, such as the fact that we can see the middle man’s legs through the scroll. And a valid use of Generative Fill. As you say – it’s very close. Not entirely sure about the sandstone entry; still too shiny. But hey, if you can’t lose the shine, then you have to embrace it – and the Vegas entry is suitably gaudy. I like how you’ve integrated it into Loyd's Vegas. The lost contact lens entry made me laugh out loud: gloriously imaginative. My only tiny criticism is that you’ve masked too much of the pointing hand – there should be some hint of bunched fingers there. I did enjoy the Star Wars entry, with a perfectly-posed C3PO sitting on that scroll. Charming. I do agree with you about the Covent Garden performers – they’re ingenious, but at the same time so what. Your take on them works a treat, with especially good reposing of the limbs. The top hat tip jar (tip top hat?) is a nice touch.

A very fine colouring-in job from Frank, remarkable not just for the realism of the colours but for the highly accomplished removal of the metallic shine. There’s a real dull fabric feel to those clothes. Excellent.

Welcome to Vegas, courtesy of lwc – and yes, the cutout does work. I like the sparkles. It fits very neatly as an ornament on that fireplace, and bonus points for flattening out the base. I enjoyed the three stooges, although like David I’ve never actually seen one of their shows. The exploding head entry is entertaining! The heat shimmer in the 4042 entry is remarkable, and very convincing. Planet of the Geckos? Is the woman spraying the statue gold or polishing it? I suspect the latter. The added shadow works well. The statue does make a rather fine clock, and I have no problem with the speed of the second hand.

I like it when Ant Snell thinks outside the box, and having the sculpture carved in wood is an ingenious take on the issue. My only issue is the position of the carver: if he’s standing in front of the scroll, how can he be leaning forwards to carve something behind him? Unless he’s had carving lessons from M C Escher, of course.

An interesting entry from GKB, which loses the gold; but what sort of metal is that? The colour makes me think aluminium, as it’s not shiny enough for steel. I like the idea of the scroll as a bus timetable, although I’d be wary of leaving Rags off his lead so close to the kerb. And yes, DavidMac is absolutely right about losing the base. And I see Rags didn’t have the energy to run to the West Midlands. That’s a rather fine medal, and I like the fact that it celebrates Challenge CMLXIX.

I like how michael sinclair’s nautical entry has the statues moving around in relation to the background, which really accentuates the sense of… excuse me, I’m feeling a little seasick…

A major rebuild from Mariner, who appears to have redrawn every element of the clothing. Crikey. It looks to me as if you started on the left and ran out of patience by the time you got to the man on the right, and I can’t say I blame you. A painstaking process. I prefer the colouring of the second version.

Seems to have been a good week for me Steve. Glad you liked them. Your comment on the pointed finger is well taken. You are absolutely right!

Thanks Steve, all were fun to work with, but the 4042 version was the most satisfying...

Weirdly my entry has vanished - I know I posted it because David and Michael refer to it in their posts - anyway here it is again for the record - a tribute to Johnsons finest achievement during office - redecorating Number ten
