Re: Contest 222: Beyond the Palin
Hi Nick, Thank you for your vote. I have a lot of experience turning Republicans into clowns. It's quite easy. First, I leave RGB colorspace and head for LAB. Here is where magic is done. I copy the face and add a Curves Adjustment Layer. In both the A and B channels, I move end points of the diagonal curve until it's almost horizontal. This removes most, but not all of the color. In LAB, the A and B channels hold the images colors, while the Lightness channel holds the light and dark values. In the Lightness channel, I torture the diagonal line. I lighten the shadows, but not too much. I almost obliterate the midtones, but not so much that all detail is removed. I try to keep as much detail in the highlights as possible. The shadows of the face are black, but they need to be colored, like skin or reflecting some local color. This is no problem, since I'm using LAB. I make a new Layer over the face and set the Blending mode to Color. With a soft brush set to an opacity of 10%, I brush in color. I brush over and over the same area, slowly building up density. I change the color every once and a while, this adds realism. I open an actual picture of a clown and sample colors to brush over midtone and light areas of the face. This, too, adds realism. To finish the image, I copy the eyes and mouth from the original color image and place them over the white face. I also like making Republicans into zombies. |

Neal, Many thanks for the mini tutorial. I've used LAB for B&W conversions, so I'll try that. Nick |

didn't know they needed help. Thought they were quite good at doing that by themselves... Some really inspired entries this week. Almost a shame Palin didn't make it, would have given us so much scope. |

Our whole government is a three ring circus and the DEMOCRATS are no exception!! And now they are the ring masters! So we can get ready to PAY! PAY! PAY! high dollars for this performance! _________________ "If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. Re: Contest 222: Beyond the Palin
That's a very political point of view - the idea that Democrat = High-Taxation has been one used by the Right-Wing for far too long. Bush wasn't shy at bringing in Taxation that always targetted the poorest in society rather than his rich pay-masters. But Bill Clinton proved the Left-Wing of American politics were no strangers keeping Big Business happy at the cost of better Public Spending. |

Re: Contest 222: Beyond the Palin
Reading the news and watching television about our politics does in no way make you an expert in American politics. You have no idea what the democrats have done to the working class as far as taxation is concerned over my LIFETIME! and this is neither the place or the time to get into it. The point I was trying to make is that each party (wether it be Democrat or Republican) points fingers at each other and the citizens of this great country are the ones to suffer while these "representatives" of the people play games with our lives. They (and I mean both parties) need to put POLITICS aside and put the PEOPLE before the government and not the other way around! This Country was formed with a government BY The People and FOR the people. And that has been lost to a political machine that cares only about their POWER and how to retain that POWER at all costs! They used to be called public servants! It is the people that serve the government now! We are becoming a Socialist government and being pushed that way more and more by the DEMOCRATIC party! I have much more to say on this subject but as I said, this isn't the place for it! _________________ "If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. Re: Contest 222: Beyond the Palin
This has clearly an inspirational week, in many ways. My congratulations to forum members from the US - a truly remarkable result. First to mock Sarah Palin was Nick Curtain, with a splendid Vogue cover. It's a good pastiche, but I'd like to point out a couple of layout issues. First, the leading is too great: all that text needs to be tightened up. Watch the line breaks, especially on phrases such as 'do your glasses match' - if the words don't fit, rewrite them. And never, ever, let a word like 'election' stick into someone's chin! I'd also steer well clear of both Arial and Times Bold on covers. The Georgia you used for '50 chic ways' is a good choice - stick with it! Fantastic second entry - the position and especially the shine on the Toby jug are perfect. Are there many totem poles in Alaska? Mguyer seems to think so, and has turned in an excellent example. Love the eyes and lips - a great match for the original! And a simple, bold statement in the second entry: those antlers make a good picture hook. And it's almost scary how well her face fits the Russian doll in the third entry - love the eyes, again! A subtly dishevelled Palin from Whaler: the skin is paler, the mouth downturned, the eyes have lost their sparkle, and of course the hair is beautifully ragged. Nice work. I loved vibeke's entry - that afro is fantastic! It's actually hard to recognize Palin under there. The skill with which her glasses have been removed is extraordinary, too: this is no easy job. A touch more shading beneath the hair on her forehead, perhaps? Otherwise perfect. Looks like GKB got rather carried away this week. His first entry shows a neat moose's revenge - with great shadows cast from that bedside light. I like the family portraits on the wall, too, and the rifle is well placed in the corner. Round off the bottom of the neck, perhaps? A great Barbie in the second entry - but if we're seeing her through an oval hole in the box, then the inside needs to be rather darker. And watch that text overlap! An entertaining third entry - great head fit and lighting. A really outstanding fourth entry - what a great poster! The lettering, the flag texture, the new teeth for Palin, the sign from last week - excellent! Say what you like, she does make a great Wonder Woman, as Ben Mills has discovered. It's a seamless join, and the matching of skin tones is spot on. Very good work, Ben. I enjoyed the second entry - it's the choice and position of the McCain figure that makes the relationship between the two work well here. Very clever work from Andy L, with the Palin mask being pulled away to reveal Dubya beneath. He's been perfectly blended into the original face, even up into the difficult hair area. Couple of small points, though: the mask would benefit from a crisp edge, rather than a feathered one; and you can't turn your hand around like that! Or does it belong to someone else? The Michael Palin connection was well made by katew - she's very neatly slotted into the poster. A good choice of image, and bringing her hair over the bandage ties it all together very well. Good work. A rather fine scarecrow from The Mad Lep, although in cases like this you do need to watch the lighting direction: on her it's coming from the right, but on the scarecrow (see the hat) it's coming from the left. Flipping one or the other would easily have fixed this! I laughed out loud at Neil O's entry - a truly fantastic piece of work, with each piercing perfectly realised. The shading and piercing holes are exactly right - beautiful work, Neil. Now if that doesn't make her electable, nothing will. Although, come to think of it - nothing will. A heavily tattooed entry from Philbo - and yes, she does fit rather well in a heavy metal body. But watch the lighting: she's a different hue to the arms. Desaturate and you're there. A very rare animation from Tom, with Palin disappearing in a puff of (Mac) smoke. Looks like you got your wish, Tom. A rather tasty candle from brewell - and some hefty moths buzzing around it. I like the texture here, and the dripping wax in front of her face. A touch more contrast overall would have given this image a bit more zing, though: try it with an Adjustment layer to see how it would look. A rather wonderful animation from tooquilos - I want it to go on and on! Perhaps keep the music going and have her running round and round? Great limb movement, and a fine choice of occupation. That sign looks great in its Alaskan setting, too. While Tom has turned to animation, james has unusually gone for still images this week, with a couple of visions of Palin as endangered species. There's something rather scary about her human features on the bears: a great job removing the original bears' faces, James. Aha, here we go - an animated second entry. Charming! A hilarious and iconic image from Josephine Harvatt, full of great references. I particularly like the apple pie halo - what a great idea! Lucky this didn't come out before the election, or it could have swung the vote the other way. Glad you finally have broadband! A gun-toting Santa from xboxmaniax - giving and taking away, eh? Couple of small issues: the shadow's rather too strong, and you need to lift her up in the frame - her eye line is way below the horizon here. Really great stuff from Deborah Morley: the blue-tinted Palin fits perfectly into the scene (although aren't polar bears a little bigger than that?). Great eye contact, and a really great idea. It's almost spooky how well Palin's head fits onto the Barbie body in Ellen's entry... but is there enough room for a shotgun in that bag? And why does the little girl appear to be eight months pregnant? A new member this week - and Derry 1 has given us a black eye to be proud of, beautifully created. The different between the bruise seen through the glass and the one above is striking; and the way the iris in the other eye has been moved to the side has been expertly achieved. A fantastic first image: I hope to see a lot more of your work. Welcome to the forum! Fantastic work from Neal, with Palin in full Ronald McDonald gear. The makeup, the new hair, the fitting into the body, all look perfect: and what a great expression! Done yourself proud again, Neal. And thanks for the full explanation: personally, I'd do this without going into LAB, since all these techniques can be achieved with adjustment layers set to Luminosity or Color mode directly in RGB - personal preference, I guess. A well achieved Statue of Liberty from michael sinclair, who has managed to give Palin a metallic quality that blends in perfectly with the original. Really well observed and realised, Michael: a thoroughly convincing job. And good to see another Mount Rushmore in your second entry - I know how hard this is to do, and you've achieved it well. And the new expression in the third entry is entertaining. Although your repeated instruction to click on her lips is a little disturbing. Our second new member this week is lwc, with a dancing Palin in front of the White House. A very well animated body, it's a great idea. And a great fitting of Palin's face into the Uncle Sam poster in the second entry - excellent texture, but I'd have taken the face a little larger. Welcome to the forum! A couple of excellent jigsaw puzzles from Luis - and, as always with Luis' work, it's the depth of detail that really makes it work studying. Look at the corners of the cardboard box, for instance, which look truly folded: beautifully achieved. Prize for the worst pun of the week has to go to maiden - a great image, but what an awful gag! Fine expressions on both faces, and that certainly is a biggish shoe. Just the one? Palin as Chinese opera star from gaoxiguo - a good looking image, her face fits the body well. But why the soft outline? I've been studying chris's entry closely, and I'm sure Palin must be nestling among those trilobites somewhere, but I just can't see her. Put me out of my misery, Chris, and reveal the location! A fine new body from Steve Mac - but with clothes like this, you do have to make sure that transparent areas (the bottom of the skirt) remain transparent when seen against a dark background. The Background Eraser tool would have done the trick here. Truly disgusting work from jwhite - and, of course, I mean that in the nicest possible way. Somehow Palin looks right at home in that gruesome setting! Neil, Maiden - back to your corners. I know this was a political Challenge, but I try to keep the argument to a minimum! |

Thanks Steve, yes I know the polar bear should have been bigger, but if I had made Sarah any smaller she would have been indistinguishable, and I liked the vast expanse around so didn't want to crop it. Wishing you a very Happy Birthday for tomorrow |
