Re: Challenge 256: Five years on
An early entry and a welcome return from BabyBiker, with lettering neatly wrapped around the egg. A strangely metallic feel to the egg white itself, but I like the sentiment! Shouldn’t one of the 5s be reversed, though? A very appealing second entry - nice fitting.

A cute first entry from GKB - neat egg cracking, and I like the added lion stamp. I wish you’d taken the Smudge tool to that chicken fur, though! Good distance blur on the tablecloth. I like the blurred mug in the second entry, and I’m certainly intrigued to see an egg that leaks custard. A fantastic third entry, with beautifully rendered raw egg white: I especially like the distortion of the tablecloth seen through it. Very neat work!

Ingenious work from Neil O: the crack in the egg is great, but the crack in the eggcup is simply fantastic. What excellent shading this is! Personally, I’d have stopped it just before the bottom inset, as it looks a touch unconvincing where it should bend around the eggcup contour.

Beautiful work from tooquilos: that unborn chick fits perfectly inside the egg. Great shading! I really like the way the shell breaks up in the animated version, ending with the chick resting its claws on the edge: and there’s some terrific tail wiggling and head nodding in the flash version... circle of life, indeed!

A great message from Emma, with someone I take to be Emma Junior busting out of the egg. So, still wearing goggles... do you guys spend all your lives in the swimming pool???

A touch of retro political comment from brewell. A great collection of expressions here, but what on earth made you think of an Iraq-shaped hole?

A hugely realistic egg interior from Nick Curtain - in fact, I’d bet this is a photographed interior of an egg. But hey, that’s what cheating is all about, right? The shell is perfectly cracked - and there’s a great translucent feel to the white.

Another bursting out chick from mguyer, with a rather small egg. Watch that shadow, Marty - it should be on the plate, but not on the wall as well!

A neatly sawn-off top from katew: I like the tiny cracked pieces in here, and there’s some good texture on that dribble of yolk. What good steam, too!

A splendidly grungy scene from LonnieK, with perfect dirt and shadows. The wildlife is neat touch, too, as is the severed egg top. My only small issue is with the dark drips, which are all coming straight down: shouldn’t they accentuate the curve of the egg by bending over it?

A nicely cracked egg from Ivan, complete with eggcup reflection in the spoon - is that hand drawn? Good fitting on the lettering, too. One thing: with the wallpaper that out of focus, the table edge should be a little more blurred as well.

Some of my favourite objects are bursting out of BigVern’s egg - neat motion blur here! I like the bevel effect on the lettering, the Pillow Emboss is just right. Just as well there’s no yolk, as that would certainly void the iPhone warranty.

A novel way to boil an egg from Vicho - now how does the steam escape? Good condensation on the side of the egg, but I’m concerned about the bottom of it: is this the world’s only double-pointed egg? Ah, there’s the steam in the second entry... this is really high-concept work! A very well drawn glass base, there.

An Irish pint, a Scotch egg - it can only be Ben Mills! Given the brightness of the salad and chips, though, shouldn’t the egg be a little more contrasty?

Amazing work from Jota120: the combination of transparency and wildlife here creates a thoroughly intriguing scene. And the shadows of the legs on the eggshell are just right. Beautifully disgusting, Trevor! A fantastic, dramatic explosion in the second entry please, tell me this is a found image and not something you’ve drawn!

The first truly raw egg of the week comes from Luis - and it’s a beautifully drawn artefact, glossy and milky at the same time. Perhaps, though, it should distort the mat and eggcup base seen through it? Great use of lettering, but the ‘Fifth Anniversary’ is curving in at the edges rather too much.

A multi-entry eggstravaganza from Josephine Harvatt this week: the Egyptian egg is neatly severed, and rather nicely embossed into the papyrus background. Good to see King Harold enjoying a final breakfast in the medieval version: I like the reworked lettering on this Bayeux tapestry! A charming sepia tinted Victorian version, leading up to the excellent 20th Century on-the-blink TV: but shouldn’t we see horizontal scan lines in here as well? And, finally, the contemporary egg. Perhaps a touch too neatly cut off? But what a great body of work! Eggcellent!

I enjoyed michael sinclair’s golden egg and spoon, and the fact that the cracks run down the eggcup as well. I do think the two outer cracks should curve around the sides, though, to show the curvature of the base. But you’re almost on topic this week, Michael!

A prematurely flying chick from Gerard - good curved lettering on the egg! The interior of the eggcup is well drawn, as is the back edge; but the inside should surely be darker, not lighter.

A clever conceit from Deborah Morley, using the old Photoshop quill to write the wording in liquid yolk. A brilliant idea, Deborah! And I like the shininess of the yolk, both inside the egg and on the drip.

I think james must have been at the mushrooms again... what a fine, detailed piece of work! Notice how when the egg man scratches his head, the shadow scratches its head as well? Not that’s the kind of attention to detail that really presses all the buttons.

Detailed cracking from The Mad Lep, complete with the Irish flag flying in the breeze. Now, if only that drip of yolk could drip down just a little further...

A neatly built book from Emil - I like the way the spine has been built up, with the highlight on the edge. A rather too neatly cracked egg, perhaps - and what’s happened to the ears on the man behind? Who is he, anyway?

A beautiful piece of surrealism from Neal: I particularly like the teeth set into the reinforced edge. Subtle shading helps the wrinkling fabric effect, and there’s a good sense of that eggshell opening towards us. Fantastic translucent quality to the egg itself, too: perfectly achieved. Good to see you back again!

Another zip, this time from gaoxiguo: and a highly decorated egg, as well. I like the fact that the zip is on the side, as the curving accentuates the curve of the egg. Nice work.

It’s the overgrown feet shadows that give the game away in Whaler’s entry: surely that’s none other than Tweety Pie? The two halves of the eggcup look curiously static, though: they aren’t lying down, but neither are they in the act of falling. Perhaps a touch of blur would help here?

An attempted entry from hi-liter - but the image is unavailable. Shame, I would like to have seen it.

Tank you Steve,

I see you noticed the ear on left side also. I was also unaesy with that but did not know what it could correct. Maybe auricle can help in that.
I do not know who is the man, I just find a photo about him on internet. He was just very good figure for my idea.

Have a nice weekend all here.

But, Steve, custard is made with eggs!

Thanks for the comment. I did enjoy this one, especially the challenge of creating the raw egg white.

Yes. But I think you'll find that eggs are not made with custard.

Thanks Steve. All the changes to the egg are hand drawn, as I couldn't find a photo that I could fit properly in my half-asleep state! I followed an online tutorial to make the steam.

Thanks Steve for the comments - and it's great to be back...

Some very excellent entries this week - I see I am going to have to get some serious practise in to reach the standards of the forum.

Apologies to Michael and Nick for using the same base image... but in the words of Frank Carson, "It's a Cracker!"

No, "conceit" is correct in the sense of an ingenious or witty thought.

Thanks for the compliments Steve. I would have thought you would have missed me just a bit. Baby Biker and Neal must be nearer and dearer to you.
