Re: Challenge 284: It came from space
I remembered that as kids we had sweets called flying saucers, although I was not too keen on them. They may be around today in one of those lovely old sweetshops with hundreds of jars full of goodies. Anyway...I just googled and found a few images. Sadly they are very low resolution and the one I used was full of noise, but Neat Image helped to reduce the artifacts considerably. Nick |

Some great entries this week. It seems like I make 1 or two appearances a year then disappear, I've not been photoshopping as I had an accident at work, and damaged the muscles and nerves in my shoulder so have not been able to use the computer properly. I have just bought my self a Wacom Tablet, and have been practicing using it well heres my attempt at this weeks challenge ![]() |

Re: Challenge 284: It came from space
Some very entertaining entries this week. What I was really looking for was as much realism as you could produce, which we found in a few entries - but it seems the forum's fun gene has pushed its way to the front once again. First into space this week was Gerard, with a fantastically atmospheric piece: superb lighting, a real sense of presence, and some really intriguing cloud formations. The saucer itself is beautifully lit, and the reflections add a lot here. Excellent! A comical and realistic entry from Josephine Harvatt - what a fantastic image of the man running! This is a really seamless piece of work. Once thing about lens flare: it's an optical illusion, rather than something that's actually in the scene, so to needs to be right at the front, rather than behind the man. I really like the period feel in the second entry - the saucer blends in perfectly, grain and all. The only problem is the perspective (oh, no, not that again). We're looking down on the saucer, but the building immediately behind it is clearly above us, since we can't see its roof. Aargh... Looks like you've got a taste for animation - the Mars Attacks effect in the third entry is glorious! Entertaining work from GKB, whose saucer has been wheel clamped. I like the aliens, and the ladder, but I have to mention the perspective thing. We're looking down on the saucer, but look at the building immediately behind it - all the horizontals are pointing downwards, which means the horizon is a long way below this. A touch of nostalgia in the second entry - most entertaining (although the laser beams could do with a little attention). I love the retro feel here, and spent far too long watching the Fireball XL5 video. Love the third entry! I do like the Red Arrows version in the fourth entry, but I do have to point out a few things here: the saucer could do with some reflections - easy enough, just copy some from the planes; the refraction through the glass is a good idea, but the refraction is more pronounced at the edges than in the middle; and your alien could really do with some controls! I love the treatment in the (gasp) fifth entry version - Gordon, slow down! You'll burn up on re-entry! The rust and cracked glass are perfect. I like the way laddition has played with the scale of the saucer, with it ending up crashed in the sand. Not sure about the disk with the man standing in it, though: too big, too prominent. The image would work a lot better without it, I think. A charming and moving piece from ziiwow, with an exploding saucer beautifully lit on a very terrestrial landscape - and the escaped alien clearly dying in the foreground. Very good use of blurring to suggest focus, and an excellent choice of background. A really good piece of work! A new member this week, and Menna has produced a strong, realistic image. Excellent lighting on the saucer, a good choice of background, and I like the way the shadows have been created. But the angle of the shadows suggests a very high light source - yet the shadows point to one way over on the right. A very good first entry - welcome to the forum, Menna! Remarkably dashing aliens in maiden's entry - although the idea of being invaded by a horde of Caplins is probably too much to bear. A fine set of reflections, and I like the way you've tucked the legs in on the flying versions. What a gullible man Mulder was, though. I like the yeti in the second entry, but there seems to be more video noise on the saucer than on the rest of the image. I think the solution here would have been to apply a video effect to the whole image. Looking ahead to a Bransonian future, Ben Mills has come up with a Virgin saucer - and why not, after all. Excellent lighting and colouring tie this image together, and the flattened base is far more convincing. Very restrained work, Ben! I like the conceit in the second entry - nicely achieved, you tell a whole story in this image. And that's some impressive underwear. Wonderful lighting from Nick Curtain, making a very valid point about scale. The beams of light give the saucers an eerie, spidery quality - very nicely achieved. The spread of light on the nose especially is perfect. The second entry takes me back - as I recall, those things were called Flying Saucers, and were filled with a particularly caustic variety of sherbert. Great image! A very subdued entry from Babybiker, with a soft landscape in the snow dominated by wind turbines - which themselves have quite an alien, otherworldly quality. Tucking the saucer behind the blade places it neatly in the picture, but also makes it look absolutely huge: I'd have put it nearer the front, perhaps with a shadow on the ground beneath? A dramatic scene from vibeke, showing the saucer glimpsed out of a plane window: it's tucked neatly into that cloud, and the tone blends perfectly with the surroundings. Thanks, too, for the interesting article: what a lot of effort, for such lacklustre results! Real subtlety from brewell - now this is exactly how UFO sightings appear. THe blur, the toning, all exactly right. Personally, I'd have brought it forward a little and added a shadow on the ground, but that's just me; what you've done is spot on. I really like the sense of scale in Jonvee Leo's entry: the alien is just big enough to be unhuman. Great lighting, and a good treatment on the saucer. And is that you with the backpack? Entertaining work. I found tooquilos's image so entertaining I'm not even going to mention the perspective issues. With such a neatly opened lid, and the yin yang crop formation, I don't think I can complain! And the animated version is ingenious - fantastic opening text! Good to see aliens from so many sources coming together. Lovely work! Some glorious spaceship designs from james - I'd love to know what they're up to! WHen you bear in mind that each different size and rotation ship has to be a separate layer, you realize the effort involved. James, you should try to take a look at After Effects - I think you'd find it liberating! Really funny work from katew - what a great caption! A touch less blur on the saucer, and perhaps make it a bit brighter to match the surroundings. Glad that fullmontage couple came in handy! An interesting entry from Jota120, blending the saucers into a drawing - a touch more contrast on the drawing, and this will work fine. I like the eyeballs! A truly excellent second entry, though - this one really ticks all the boxes. Great lighting, there's a real sense of drama here. Extreme subtlety from powerslave - which, you have to admit, is not what we expect from Brendan. A fantastic job turning the saucer around - and, I have to admit, those are pretty damn cool hubcaps. Real sci-fi beauty from LonnieK , with an attractive off-world scene. Are the saucers just a little too stretched out, though? I like the lighting - sometimes Lens Flare simply does the job. Les Moore's entry is not just really funny, it's highly skilled. Look at the interior of the hatch opening, with the alien and his reflection; the industrial robot; and how on earth did you find an image of a horse being lifted by the neck? Excellent tone, the leg in the foreground creates real visual interest, and great lettering. Just one thing - reflections of the horses in the underside of the saucer? Either that, or remove the reflected leg. There's a whole feature film in China's entry - so many excellent effects, so much action! My only real problem here is with shadows: the planes taking off need to have them, and the shadow of the saucer is too strong and too big - and must not go over the sky! A very interesting effect from wayne morton, although as the saucer appears to be beaming something up I'd really like to see an object, animal or person inside those hoops. The hoops themselves seem a little hard-edged, perhaps? An intriguing effect, though. Our second new member this week is Carlo Alessandro Della Valle, with a beautiful entry. The child in the foreground, waving, gives the whole image meaning; the sun just glinting behind the saucer is beautiful, and the lighting on the saucers is perfect. Just one thing: those shadows of the legs need to be pointing towards the sun, rather than off to the side. Otherwise, this is a very skilled and enjoyable entry. Welcome to the forum! Subtle work from Neal, who has chosen an overhead view to match the perspective of the saucer. It's a great shot, the saucer blended nicely into the scene through the use of convincing reflections and a strong shadow. Are there really two shuttles on the go at any one time, though? Or have you added the second one? Try as I might, I couldn't spot Dubya in this image. Have you finally been cured? A very cute image from redsnapper - what a great idea. Of course, I have my usual problem with the perspective - the saucer doesn't match the viewpoint of the scene - but everything else is right! Convincing work from Jeepy - I like the angle of the saucer, and the lighting. I'm not sure the overlaid texture really works: perhaps a lot of grain would be better? A cool-looking alien in michael sinclair's entry, with a couple of dustbins setting the scene. I like the way the saucer hangs in there, and you've made a valiant attempt to draw the dustbin lids! But reemember that with strong shadows, you get strong shading on the objects as well as behind them. What's most interesting about Emil's work is that while the saucer looks highly realistic - greatly helped by the new surface texture - it's the Poser-rendered man who looks artificial. Very good lighting on him, though, matching the dappled light on the ground: good work! Great subtlety from Deborah Morley, with a saucer neatly framed behind the trees. I like the colouring here, and the radial light beams; this is a very good looking image. A third new member this week: and Tomiloi has produced a really strong, colourful entry, with jets shooting out of the legs, great aliens, and a fantastic visual radio beam at the top. A fantastic first entry - bienvenue chez notre forum, Thomas! Spectacular death and destruction from Salfordnurse, with plenty of flames and melting buildings. I like the saucer treatment here, and the text has a good effect on it - but watch your choice of font! An elegant serif font like this is wholly inappropriate. What this image needs is a strong, bold sans serif. What fun! |

Thanks Steve It was spooky that we had an awayday at work yesterday and someone brought in a jar of retro sweets and in there were flying saucers, identical to those in the image. Have to say that my opinion has not changed in 40 years, they're still horrible! Nick |
