Re: Contest 238: Contact lenses, anyone?
When I posted this Challenge, I really thought it was going to be so difficult that we'd only get a few entries. Once again, I've been amazed by the skill and ingenuity of forum members: and, once again, I'm having to keep the original image on view as I write this to remind myself of what's been changed in each post.

First to take the specs off was Jeepy, with a clean approach. The added ageing is well achieved, using a mouth from another photograph. When you take the colour out of hair and eyebrows, though, be sure to do this on a new layer, and then erase the desaturated skin with a soft edged brush: grey skin never looks convincing! A good job balancing those shadows, though.

I like the prison uniform in Josephine Harvatt's entry, and the bald dome is a perfect fit - very neatly achieved. Be careful not to overuse the Smudge tool, though: beneath the eyes, in particular, there are areas lacking in texture that look a little artificial.

Some serious signs of withering and debauchery from GKB - heavens, Gordon, you were only supposed to blow the bloody glasses off! This looks like the face of someone who's brought the world banking system to its knees. Oh, hang on a minute... great veins, sunken cheeks, sagging mouth and greyed hair. Thanks for the animated version!

A spectacular trio of entries from ananthe, with some beautifully removed glasses - although there is a noticeable thickening of the bridge of the nose, which could be slimmed down slightly. But it's the youthful and aged versions that really capture our attention: ingenious, painstaking and detailed work in both cases. The adding and removing of wrinkles has been expertly achieved here, with solid, consistent results. Excellent stuff! And I enjoyed the fourth entry - he just needs to save up for the other half of the anti-ageing potion.

There's a slight car crash look to steve hill's entry, especially around the bridge of the nose and the cheeks. Partly it's the inconsistent colour here. Try using a soft brush at a low opacity, set to Color mode, and paint some flesh tone over the desaturated areas: the texture should work OK when this is fixed.

A straightforward approach from Luis, with a clean result: but the skin is excessively smooth around the eyes. More bags and wrinkles needed here! Try painting some in on a Hard Light layer, that way you can always Undo if it goes wrong.

Excellent texture from Paul2007: seamless joins, and the ear is a perfect match. Again, though, the cheeks and eyes are too free of bags and wrinkles - looks like he's been hitting the Botox rather hard...

Subtle work from vibeke - I especially like the blue contact lenses. There's a slight blueness to the skin above the eyes, though - contact leakage? And again - more bags and wrinkles needed, the end result is just too smooth. And talking of smooth - the second entry is excellent, with a thoroughly convincing youthful appearance. Still got the blue eye shadow, though!

I love Tom's entry: the aged book has a terrific quality to it, and the glassless Greenspan is immaculate. I notice you've made the eyes a little larger to compensate for removing the lens effect - good call! And, as always in your work, the texturing is perfect. Beautiful work, Tom - and the second entry is stunning in its textural detail. The added smoke is an innovative touch.

Very detailed work from Nick Curtain, with a great new ear and well patched skin. Once again, I'm asking for more wrinkles at the sides of the eyes - but this is otherwise a convincing job. Most impressed by the film star look in the second entry!

Plenty of wrinkles from Steve Mac, so no complaints there. Are the eyes now just a touch too large? And is the right eye further out than the left? Overall, though, a very neat job.

Good work from C@zzy, with well patched eyes and nose and a more youthful appearance overall. Be careful when tinting the hair, though, not to get to sharp a line - this looks rather painted on. And is the bridge of the nose a little too thick, do you think? I like the size of the eyes, this looks about right to me. And I love the second entry - Silence of the Lambs, eh? Very neatly achieved, and great shading.

A lot of texture from gaoxiguo, especially in the cheeks. I like the new colouring, he looks much more alive. But where are the bags under the eyes? We need them back! I like the much younger second entry - makes him look far more handsome.

There's the air of a French philosopher to Gerard's post - maybe it's just the cigarette. Excellent texture, I like the enlarged eyes. Couple of points: the mouth needs to open to hold the cigarette! And are you sure about that pointed triangle at the top of the nose? Has he had a new nose glued on?

A very elderly Greenspan from Hope Leslie Laust - I certainly can't complain about the number of wrinkles in this one. I like the thickening of the nose in this one, the baldness and the expertly drawn white hairs. Some of the wrinkles look a little painted on, though: remember, each crease has both a light and a dark side to it.

Good to see Meltonian back - with a spectacular entry that has it all. Enlarged eyes, perfect patching, greyed hair, bags and wrinkles, a subtle downturn to the mouth: immaculate work. Very neat, Graham.

An old, flabby, decrepit Greenspan from brewell - this one certainly does look like he's lived hard. I like the distorted features, but you do need to watch those areas with no texture: some of it's just too smooth. Good hair thinning, though.

Ha ha ha ha ha - I love mguyer's work - the best "cheat" of the week! And judging by her reflection, Mrs Mguyer is duly impressed. Touch of genius, Marty - especially the reworked second entry, which is a great improvement. You've had fun with the third entry - but it's not just his teeth that are missing, his entire face is melting. Must have stayed out in the sun too long.

An ingenious animation from james, as the glasses come off and on again: but it's the extra touches, like the smile and the moving pupils, that really make this one sparkle. Great work!

A good attempt from Daniel H - and yes, this is a difficult Challenge. The main problem is the bridge of the nose, which is too sharp. The rest of the face works well. And the second entry is fantastic - it looks as if you enjoyed this one!

An ancient, sagging Greenspan from stefan - and a great piece of work. My only real problem here is with the area above the eyebrows, where the two textures fight with each other: stretch the new forehead down (and centre it over his nose) and this will work much better.

Some slightly over-smooth areas from maiden - but they're all cunningly concealed in the ingenious second entry. Great Joker makeup, especially the slight green tint to the hair! Is he supposed to be soft focus, or is some of the white makeup leaking out of the sides of his head?

A variety of glasses-wearing impersonations from tooquilos - I think the Groucho one makes me laugh the most, although Dame Edna is a close second. Hugely enjoyable, Anna - but do watch your pupils, which seem to have slipped out of the bottom of the eyes.

A very grumpy Greenspan from Ben Mills - and just a few charcoal-like smudges where the glasses have been taken off. But bring back those eye bags and wrinkles!

A rather hasty entry from Jota120 - something nasty going on around those eyes, Trevor! I guess its the onset of lycanthropy, which shows up more clearly in the second entry... you know, I think he looks rather better this way.

It looks to me as if Cl&m&nt posted and removed a few entries - is this right? Was there no final entry you were happy with?

Fantastic, inspiring work from everyone. A tremendous week!

Thanks Steve,
I smiled at the Michael Caine touch in your response.

I thought that there were some terrific entries this week considering the difficulty...great work everybody.

Yes, good work all round I think although if I never have to look at another photo of Alan Greenspan again it won't be too soon !

You are quite right about the under eyes of course Steve - it wasn't so evident when I looked at it in PS but every time I looked at the posted version it really made me cringe - not the first time that has happened - I don't really understand why - something to do with the screen resolution maybe ?

Many thanks for the comments Steve. You're right about the wrinkles and perhaps I should have looked in the mirror before starting out!

A late entry from Cl&m&nt - good to see it here at last! The skin looks rather like wax, and I can see a lot of repetitive pattern from the cloning. But maybe that's how he would look without his glasses? Well done getting the work in, finally.
