Contest 9: Switch on the light
Back to some basics this week, with what should be a fairly straightforward Photoshop job: turn this light on. You'll have to pay close attention to - aw, no, you can figure that out for yourselves. Go ahead, see what you can do. As always, you'll find the high res image here. ![]() |

Re: Contest 9: Switch on the light
At first I thought this was going to be simple. I was wrong... Very wrong. I loved this project and put alot of work into it, and in the end, I am very pleased with what I came out with. So here, I turned on the lamp for you Steve. ![]() _________________ [IMG://img41.exs.cx/img41/6348/atomicredonesmall.jpg] |

Re: Contest 9: Switch on the light
Maiden, I like the way you subtly added in the light bulb glowing through the shade. I was going to add that in as well as the metal that holds the lamp shade in place, but I got a little lazy. Oh yeah, that lamp shade did need a little fixing. Thanks for the displacement filter tips. raymardo _________________ Sometimes you have to stand in your neighbor's backyard to get a good view of your own. raymardo |

Hi guys, sorry I havent been on in ages, Ive been so busy at work lately just havent had any time free. Love the entries, especially yours maiden, the smoke is very convincing. Reminds me of some of the places i have to play at!! Sorry I nicked your idea of using the lense flare as a light bulb, i tried painting it as Steve said on the tutorial but I just couldnt get it to work any other way. ![]() |

Re: Contest 9: Switch on the light
I love your pink lampshade and I do think adding the lens flare just sparkles up the brightness of the bulb, which is what would happen if you were pointing a camera at it. Very well done Russ. |

Re: Contest 9: Switch on the light
Well, that was a tricky one! I thought you'd have some difficulty getting that right - a lot harder than it looked, as Atomicfog pointed out (well done getting the first entry in - although your revised version was much improved.) Not sure the 'visible light' works in such a brightly-lit room; maybe darkening the background would have helped. Tabitha, I think you had this problem as well - although you did get rid of the shadow to the right of the sofa (why didn't all the rest of you spot that?). A typically artistic interpretation from Raymardo, some great textures there - but we shouldn't overlook the fact that this light really is lit now! The problem of the visibility of the light itself was faced by several of you - Russ, your camp lamp is much prettier than my original, but all that light spilling out is overkill! and where's my boiled egg? - and maiden, your solution of adding smoke to make the light visible was truly inspired. If perhaps a little too foggy. Well done, those of you who took the trouble to paint the light bulb in as seen through the shade - Atomicfog, nice try, but maiden's subtle rendering (love the shadow of the shade support!) is fantastic. The Lens Flare was a great way of bringing the glow to the front. uk2usadaz, your entry has perhaps the most beautiful lamp itself - that one really glows, you've managed to make the thing come alive. But what's going on with your shading? surely a conical shade should cast a conical beam - and shouldn't the underside of the base of the lamp be darker, rather than lighter? From a purely photographic viewpoint, tweaknik's understated entry comes closest to classical perfection. That loop of light on the wall really makes the whole thing work (note how it even breaks around the door frame, nice touch there) and the shadow beneath the base is admirable. You may have only just got this one in on time, but it's precisely what I was hoping for! Sometimes subtlety really works. |

Re: Contest 9: Switch on the light
Just found these competition so I decided to join one at random. I tried go get a realistic feel. I am glad to have found this forum., seem to be a good lot of nice people. Basically I copied the various elements onto new layers, and played around with (many) gradient masked layers in screen mode (various opacities). Also I added a hard shadow. ![]() Tack skall ni ha. ![]() |
