Contest 16: Wanton destruction

I do a photomontage cartoon strip in The Times once a week about a taxi driver with Sphere, who posts here occasionally. In the cartoon we did yesterday we featured a smashed-up taxi and used a wreck I photographed a year ago. But I was wondering, would anyone like to take a sledge hammer to a perfectly good London cab? There's a high res copy here, with a clipping path if you want to use it.

Oh the irony of it all

To all our not Brit members it's a long running joke (mostly untrue) that London Cabbies won't venture South of the River Thames at certain times of the night due to the level of assaults, muggings and violence etc. in the South of London.

That looks like it was pretty hard to make maiden... Good job.
But why is that asian talking like a redneck

?
(For the smoke instead of using eyecandy, I found it is easier to get a picture of smoke on a black backround and use a blending mode)

Anyhow, here mine is... I took a slightly different approach.

Okay, if this is a bit naff

I apologise but this is my first crack at a montage. I have recently purchased Steves book so I am not yet up to speed with everything but thought I would have a go and see how I got on. Any pointers greatly appreciated !

No need to apologise Chris it's pretty good the weather proof sheet is a little fuzzy at the bottom edge which distracts from the rather nice Dodge and Burn you have done and the dust on the taxi looks convincing to me especially the "Clean Me" written on the window haha

Thanks Maiden. Yeah, I wasnt really happy with the dust sheet in the end but I needed to use it to disguise the inside of the cab as I didnt feel I would have been able to provide a convincing interior. I used the smudge tool a lot to give the impression if an uneven edge but I over did it a bit. I would love to understand the technique of creating smoke. By the way, I love your work and the humour that goes with it. It gives me something to aspire to.

The smoke in my pic was created using Eye Candy 4000 but a similar effect can easily be created just using a Soft Brush set to 50% gray to draw the wisps of smoke then some Dodge & Burn to give highlights and shadow.

Another way is to use the clouds filter with a heavy white bias (CTRL+F) until you get it just right. Adjust with auto levels Then use layer blending. I then set the mode to Screen.

I also added a little motion blur for effect.

I made a second one to demonstrate the smoke technique I was talking about earlier. Get some smoke from another picture, and tweak it using blending modes and adjustments to make a great smoke look.

Not one of my better ones, but you get the idea, which is, incidentally, our cabbie taking a wrong turn in Fallujah.
