Contest 18: Halloween
Yesterday afternoon I was given an interesting rush job: to carve the words WHOSE STUPID IDEA WAS THIS? into a pumpkin. A surprisingly tricky one, this, and those of you who live in the UK can see the results on the front of the second section of today's Guardian.

Anyway, I got some useful techniques out of this one: how to do 3D lettering cut into a ball, how to make convincing glows, how to turn a photo of a pumpkin lit from the outside into one lit from the inside. But before I write up a tutorial for the next edition, I thought I'd give you lot the chance to work it out for yourselves. Your high res pumpkin is here: do with it what you will.

Sorry Steve to keep pulling your leg (you must have one very long leg by now) but I couldn't resist.

I struggled to get the thickness on the cut out part of the pumpkin. Can anyone give me any pointers please. Trinity, I was blown away by your image. I think its superb !

Re: Contest 18: Halloween
Chris,

Getting the 3D look on a spherical object is a real pain!

Normally, if you're cutting something out, it's a simple case of creating a darker/lighter offset layer behind but because of the viewpoint, this won't work.

I used the dual layer method but created the lettering with paths. I cut the outer layer, then edited the paths slightly before cutting out the rear layer. There are still bits to tidy up afterwards, where the layers don't meet. I used the polyganal lasso to join them, sampling and filling the selection with the same colour as the second layer.
