Contest 78: Eco footprints
This is a job I was given yesterday, and I thought it would make an interesting challenge. It's to accompany a piece in the Daily Telegraph about eco footprints: all about how much land we all 'use' in terms of farming space for the food we consume, landfill sites for our garbage, and so on. It was a tricky one to illustrate, so I ended up with the idea of a boot (footprint, geddit?) turned into a gas-guzzling car, with various wasteful consumer products added. The boot I used is here; image courtesy of PhotoObjects.net. I may post my own attempt at the end of the Challenge, as long as none of you show me up too badly! ![]() |

Re: Contest 78: Eco footprints
Steve I was wondering about the work you do for the national press. I would of thought that the large national newspapers would of had in house Photoshop teams that deal with retouching the photo's before print and headline making and special effects etc, if so why do the papers not ask them to create images for their storie? (not that I am trying to put you out of work or anything! god forbid). Just wondering really. |

Re: Contest 78: Eco footprints
All newspapers have in house designers, of course, some of whom can do basic retouching in Photoshop. mostly working with PS 6 or lower. But, thankfully, they still hire illustrators to do the illustrations! Partly, it's a question of time; you need to be doing montages all day to get up to any reasonable speed, and when a job's on a tight deadline - I did this one in a couple of hours - it's a lot easier for them to outsource it. |

Here is a friend of mine taking the boot for a spin. I hadn't noticed before how damaging his footprint can be. ![]() Click here for the high res version. |

Iwas not sure of where to go with this and do not have the talent to match the previous submissions. I hope this imparts some feeling of visiting the areas where attempts are made at some preservation of nature. ![]() |

Re: Contest 78: Eco footprints
Thanks for the generous comments and thoughts. Love the fun in the pictures. The eco friendliness of GE's forest with both a giraffe and a brown bear...and dalton's flying boot. I did laugh with mguyer's very eco awareness of walking boots in places of natural beauty. I'm not sure whether the HiRes is posted at the time as a norm or not. Sorry if I should have done so at the time but it is at: http://homepages.enterprise.net/tedeggs/fc/fc78 |

Nice montages so far everyone. mguyer, I especially like your 'eco friendly' two left feet. |

Re: Contest 78: Eco footprints
it goes with being left handed. see my entry of last week. Actually do you see 2 left feet or 2 right feet and is the original that we were given a left or a right? |

Re: Contest 78: Eco footprints
Having looked at the original again I think that what we see is the arch of the foot relative to the flat of the sole thus it would be a boot for the left foot. I have to say I hadn't studied the boots for their left or right handedness. ![]() Ted |

Re: Contest 78: Eco footprints
Symbolically speaking, the more industry we have, the land and resources we tread upon. That's the idea of my picture. All of the scenery and the boy comes from the file "sweatshirt.psd" on the book CD. The shoeprint and the factories come from various internet sources. Free transform, probably apparent, was frequently used to achieve this result ![]() _________________ In general, never generalize |
