Contest 246: Lift the lid
It might surprise some that I should go all the way to Norway and come back with a photograph of a manhole cover, but you have to admit it is a very fine manhole cover.

What I want you to do is to lift the lid and show me what lies beneath. It's not quite as easy as it sounds: you'll need some subtle shading to make this one convincing.

High res is here.

Ben,
What bugs Bunny bugs me!
Manhole covers are circular because that's the one shape that can't fall into the hole.
Your square cover has offended my geometric sensibilities.
Otherwise, it's a great image - fun to look at, with good earth properly in the background.

Back from a holiday in Singapore and Hanoi, sorry to have missed the last 2 challenges, but just to hard on a laptop and lacking time.
Here is my Lizard escaping. Photographed him/her in Coffs Harbour last year.

Thanks Bruce (I think)
Sorry about your sensibilities but there really are some square ones out there somewhere
Ben.

Ben I'm no expert but I would think the majority of those you have shown are either water outlets (Fire Brigade, Water Board etc), sewage runs (linking to the main sewers) or rain water drainage rather than man-holes which are access to the main sewers. However, I couldn't say with any expertise that all man-hole cover have to be circular but the image that Steve has linked certainly is circular as you can see the mark where the leverage rod seperates the circular cover from the rectangular housing. As for the image with the man popping out that would be at my guess a Vietnamese Fox Hole or whatever they were called used during the Vietnam war for evading the Amercians.

Re: Contest 246: Lift the lid
Hey Ben - here's a whatif for you:

_ What if you shaded the earth in the hole
into a cylinder, instead of that hard-edged cube?

Move the frame & the bunny and see what's up.doc

Now I'm not saying that anything will work, but it's sure
got me thinking. Thanks for the inspiration.

B'e Well.

Re: Contest 246: Lift the lid
Round or square manholes- that's peanuts. LOL. The real issue here is WHY IS IT CALLED A MANHOLE??? I propose that from now on its referred to as a person hole

And yes Steve, I know my shadow is moving in sync with the snake...however, I saved over the original psd and now I cant go back to fix it. So please overlook this, and work on the premise that it is a stationary shadow LOL

Re: Contest 246: Lift the lid
I wonder why I have 4 Service Access Points (yes the politically correct term ) near me and so close together. Nice? Someone seems to have labelled them with spray paint (S, F, -> ), so they must love them? Or a message for the aliens! Actually there are even more nearby and labelled, but I could not get them into the shot and those are all square and in the road!! Yes weather bad! Well it is approaching summer now!

Hope to give another contribution later, and a bit more than bath foam and less noise.

Re: Contest 246: Lift the lid
Looks like he's having fun Ben!

This is proving quite a tricky challenge, looks easier than it actually is. I have a few ideas lurking, so I hope to get another one in at some point, if I can find the images I need.
In the meantime...
(Edit: Sorry, I've changed the manhole cover, I forgot it's meant to be a circle.)
