Challenge 358: The music machine
I found this sculpture in London's Holland Park the other day, and was struck by how the animators among you might like to make it move. Will turning the gear be as difficult as it looks? Or is there a shortcut?

For those who find animation really beyond them, I've included an extra view of the sculpture. Use the two images to build a new music machine, or extend this one in any way you choose.

High res are here and here.

Note
I'm off to Graz, Austria, next week to record some video training for Wacom. Hope to be back in time to write up this week's Challenge, but if it's a couple of hours late that will be the reason.

Animation isn't completely beyond me but the mechanical engineering may be

Looking forward to some Austrian themed challenges

Lovely work Anna and a great sound track. One of my favourite Purple albums is Made In Japan. Sorry I couldn't take part in your challenge last week - no time and family commitments, but great work by all.

That was quick Anna and great work, including the music. Impressive. You know I'm not good at gif and vids etc, but guess give it a go at the challenge. I can see in my mind, but how to translate.

(Music: I saw them them live in Birmingham and later motorcycled around Lake Lucerne .. in the rain, no smoke, just clouds... ). Guess enjoy more radical music too ...

And yes enjoyed your previous inspired challenge and just managed to get an entry in.

Here we go! My first attempt with animated GIFs !!! I had to go back to CS2, to achieve this goal , but it was worth!!! The main difficulty I had was to lower the image size to save for web. Let's see !!!

What a delightful piece of sculpture Steve, but I feel it ought to be in its appropriate setting and state.

What cute little guy WallE is

This is a high resolution image, so to see more detail click on its image:

I cant do animation so you'll just have to imagine the music windmill turning and creating magical sheet music!!!

Anna, great artistry on your video production as always but for once I'm not sure your choice of music works. A difficult one as the starter image doesn't exactly match a specific instrument. Could be any brass instrument, largest being a tuba I think. And how many of us know tuba music???

Off topic, have a listen to Telemann's trumpet concerto in D played by Swedish player Hakan Hardenberger, specifically the Adagio. Available on Amazon. It is sublime.

thank you Sophie The reason I chose Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple was because its a famous guitar riff and since I was creating a "new" Guitar Hero game for the Xbox...I felt some correlation between the two.....

Thank you for the recommendation of Telemann's trumpet concerto. I actually have it but its by Richard Edlinger. Ill have a listen to the Swedish guys version soon

Many thanks to Nick and Trevor also for your comments )

This was much harder than I expected, and I'm not at all happy with the result.

Oops sorry ran out of time and don't do GIF often ... a mixture of rock, heavy metal and err..!?, Roxy Music esk, but maybe more Led Zep or Hawk Wind, or Punk. A bit of a "Dad's Dance" from the heavy metal machine

Amazing machines
