Challenge 363: Medusa lives!
Sophie spotted this sculpture in her local garden centre, and felt it had potential for a Friday Challenge. I agree: but what would it take to bring that head, and those snakes, to life?

High res is here.

Note: I'm going on holiday (vacation) to France for two weeks, so I won't be around to write up this or, indeed, the next Friday Challenge. I'll write everything up when I return.

David Asch will be looking after the Forum in my absence, so please give him your support. Thanks!

Thoughts on a colonoscopy.

Once again I have run out of time for this but can I just take the opportunity to say that I hope that all Friday challengers and HCIP fans in the big UK cities are safe and sound

Just done 'It's all in the eyes' (Chapter 8 in HTCIP) so had a go with this. Struggled a bit but here it is anyway!

Great works of imagination as always from one and all. James, your animation is thoroughly ........venemous!

Really sad I haven't been able to take part.

Re: Challenge 363: Medusa lives!
Back from France - and most enjoyable it was, too - to sum up the last Challenges. The first entry in the Medusa round was from tooquilos, with an ingeniously reconstructed version of the original sculpture - with excellent texture throughout, and rather fabulous snake eyes. Very subtle movement in the animated version - and what a perfect soundtrack! Where on earth did you find it?

Clever work from Nick Curtain, slipping ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair into the frame - with a nicely reshaped mouth, matching the original. I like the recolouring, as well, but won't comment on the politics...

All you ever wanted to know about Medusa in a nutshell, from GKB - and everything's in here, from the reflective shield to Pegasus. Perseus himself could do with a touch of colour variation - and I'm not even going to begin to address the perspective in this scene!

I've never had a colonoscopy myself, but brewell's depiction makes me rather glad of the fact, Great snakes, and subtle colouring.

A clever reconstruction from Deborah Morley, with interwoven snakes (plenty of layer masks here, I'd guess) and a convincing stone texture on the new face. Love those eyes!

A very graphic Medusa from Ben Mills, whose snakes are encroaching on the head so much they're eating into it. I really like the one coming out of the mouth.

Great eye direction from puffin31939 - and the added snake head there makes good sense of the look. I like the recolouring, but perhaps we could have done with a little detail in that large, gaping mouth?

Truly startling snaky animation from James - with a terrific final lunge! I'll be seeing that one in my nightmares.

Clever work from tissana, whose Medusa is bursting out of a glass case. There's a lot to like here - the tape, the blood, the case itself - but a few oddities: why is the glass so black, especially on the floor? Why is the bottom of the case fuzzy? And you really need to draw some vanishing lines to get that perspective right!

Clever work from PDelavigne in rebuilding the original with a living head, and indeed living snakes - very nicely achieved. Should she be looking directly at the viewer, though?

A touch of psychedelia from BigVern, with wacky colouring and overlaid flames. Love the eyes - but is that a tongue in her mouth? Looks a little like she's eating a herring...

LagoDiLecco's entry is the only one this week to take the head and place it on a new body - and it's a nicely achieved piece of work, especially with the stone texture added to the arms. The only thing, er, is that Medusa was of course a woman...

Great textures from joeysala, with great added snakes that bring the statue to life nicely. I like the eyes and the snake tongue - really spooky!

A load of real snakes replacing the carved ones in Garfield72's entry - clever use of texture here, and the heads have been especially well placed. But when dealing with these fine textures you do need to watch that you don't over-extend them, which can just result in them looking blurry: you've set yourself a tricky challenge here!

Thanks, Sophie, for the original image.
