Challenge 364: Photo fixing
This week's Challenge comes from Michael Sinclair, who was asked by a friend if he could repair this excessively damaged photograph. Possible, surely, but not an easy task... feel like a bit of meticulous retouching? Reminder: I'm away until Monday 22nd August, and will write up comments when I return. High res is here. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 364: Photo fixing
Michael, Thanks for an excellent choice for the Friday challenge. A tricky one given the silver stains and blemishes. I felt that removing the major damage and leaving some of the blemishes did more justice to the photograph than a blanket restoration. ![]() Larger file http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s93/GKBphoto/Retouched.jpg _________________ You do not need a parachute to skydive. Re: Challenge 364: Photo fixing
I had a private message from one of our overseas members asking if I was going to do my own submission to which I answered "of course!". But first things first: I would like to say how impressed I am with everyone's results so far; secondly, I'm gobsmacked by Nick's colour submission: it's so very good capturing extra detail--especially of the trees, Thirdly, an interesting story connected with the original print has emerged since I submitted it to Steve three weeks ago. TIME, COST, and LACK OF APPRECIATION Through confusion, and poor communication my friend was taken for a bit of a ride! The original print is owned by a Turkish lady (the picture has no family connection to her at all) who runs a cafe in one of the cities in the midlands here in the UK, and she wanted it restored with 11 additional prints for her friends presumably. My friend, a generous sort, said I know someone (me) who can do that for you. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I did the restoration ensuring the photoshopped restoration was the exact same size as the tatty original. So, after two trips to Staples (stunning laser service, and superb staff), £40 and two hours wait (on this occasion), I and my friend were ready to go all the way to this neigbouring city's cafe to delight this lady withy my magical transformation of the original print.. "...No I don't like that! No I don't want that! I wanted the actual original restored" she wailed! There was no "sorry to have put you to all that trouble and cost etc" . Oh well it's been an interesting experience. ![]() ![]() A closeup of the image reveals most of the people in the boat don't look happy: ![]() |

Re: Challenge 364: Photo fixing
I would love to spend more time on this challenge (ideally I'd start again!) However I have no more time this week so this will have to do. Nick, your colouring of the photo is fantastic. ![]() _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: Challenge 364: Photo fixing
Hi Michael, and folks! As you said " first things first" : thanks for your reply to my message, and I'm sorry by your waste of effort and time, with one so good work, for nothing! In my long carrer, as a photo restorer, I've heard this at many times from the customers, althought I never made any work over the original! Every time, I'd explained to the clients, that if a photo needs some restoration,of course, any fix you can do over it will be washed out, by so many reasons that will only extend our talk unnecessarily by now ! But anyway, in the specific case of this photo,of course that it would benefit a lot the restoration work if you had submited it to a chemical bath for cleaning of those silver stains caused by silver oxidation before scan it ! And judging by the quality of your close-up of the original, it's possible to see that this photo had a better quality of image than this version that was offered for us to work on ! To sum everything up, I guess that there is no conditions to show a really good work of restoration within the given conditions. And, sorry Gordon, but any restoration work , must be complete! Those marks were not there in the original , at the time it was made ! Here's my version for the challenge ! ![]() |
