Challenge 393: House the Legosaur
Browsing around a model shop last weekend, I found a magnificent dinosaur built entirely of Lego. A truly spectacular piece of work. It made me wonder: how might we treat a new background so that it also appeared to be made of Lego, without having to draw individual bricks? Would the Mosaic filter on its own be enough, or would that just produce square bricks? And how would we make it look three-dimensional? This might be a tricky one - or it might turn out to be very easy. Who knows, before you start work on it? High res is here. ![]() |

My submission from Challenge 346 http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com/cgi-bin/simpleforum_files/attachments/legoeid.jpg Prophetic or pathetic ... can't decide :-) Needs some 3D-ness though. |

Carnage in Lego Land as Legosaurus legs it from Lego’s latest Jurassic line. ![]() |

Brewell I'm not sure how you achieved that contour pixel effect on the ground but it's looking good! ![]() _________________ “Art Is Never Finished, Only Abandoned.” |

Re: Challenge 393: House the Legosaur
Thanks, Artwel. I made a desaturated dinosaur layer for a texture source, cranked up the Contrast, added Soft Light and mapped sections of texture onto parts of the image. Not exactly quick and easy, but I like the results. _________________ Onward and upward! Excelsior! |

I realised that there was something not quite right about my first post. ![]() http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s93/GKBphoto/Legomonument-valleyv2.jpg _________________ My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning, can you believe that 2:30am?! Re: Challenge 393: House the Legosaur
I've gone a bit off brief and created everything from scratch so I could build and render the 3D model in Photoshop. I must say the inflation of the dino in Repousse worked quite well. I'll keep tinkering and maybe animate it as well if I get time. Bigger one here: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r160/BigVernphoto/Legosauringrenderfinal01.jpg The lego bumps (on the yellow ground bricks and green foliage) are pseudo 3D as they are merely bump maps applied to the surface using a greyscale template I created. I wanted to create true bumps in 3D but every time I tried to create separate 3D layers for the bumps through Repousse or 3D from selection or from greyscale PS would tell me that what I was trying to do was too complex. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could make the bumps true 3D? Thanks Vern |

Ooops smaller image did not show up in my post ... so here it is. I've just noticed that my dino has somehow lost his rear leg ... investigation is needed into my selection and masking abilities. ![]() |

Gordon, nice textures but your mountains do not cast shadows on the ground? |

Re: Challenge 393: House the Legosaur
Vern that looks great, real nce 3d style, is the dino missing a couple of shadows from the front plant? Im sure steve can advise you on the bumps. This is a great example of 3d in photoshop, i havent really tried mich myself as the computer slowed down too much. Have you tried 3d programs, such as 3dmax (pc only) or Cinema 4d? Im sure they would be much easier for real 3d modelling? _________________ “Art Is Never Finished, Only Abandoned.” |

Re: Challenge 393: House the Legosaur
Vern, like that. Mine is not so much lego (that brings back too many memories of the computer), but more building blocks. And of course I didn't set an action to record Filter Gallery, but did write it down and have now thrown the piece of paper away! ![]() |

Re: Challenge 393: House the Legosaur
Hi Debora, great minds think alike - I used the same filter. I adjusted the size of the squares more or less to the ones on the legosaur. However, when I reduced the file size for web it lost its credibility, so I didn't post it. Here's a link http://www.evaroth.com/model |
