Challenge 401: Carp fishing
I was near a lake full of giant carp the other day, and was intrigued by how they appeared when seen through the murky water. So I took a photograph. In the high res image, here, I've removed a brown carp and a gold one from the picture. This is the shape and position they took up: ![]() They were both rather clearer than the deeper, murkier fish that remain in the shot. Your task this week: can you recreate both fish, in roughly those positions, as they would appear when seen through the water surface? At the end of next week I'll post the solution. |

Done a lot of fishing in my day Steve - don't know how deep these were (besides not familiar with these fish) but here's my best guess - nothing fancy just trying to stay within the challenge - my shot how they might look. Frank Higher Res: http://users.eastlink.ca/~fbwhite/carp.jpg ![]() |

Re: Challenge 401: Carp fishing
A spectacular image from Ant Snell kicks off this week's activities - with just the right amount of fuzziness to the submerged fish But what I really like about this one is the extra drama: the twist of the large carp as it escapes the jaws, the reflection of the crocodile showing it's above the surface. A well thought-out, perfectly achieved composition. Certainly good enough to earn you a title, Tony. So, let's see... with no biographical detail in your profile, I think it has to be Specular Specialist for this image alone. Good work! I like the angle of view in Frank's image - with very good toning of the carp, and some nice concealment beneath the surface. Should we be able to see a little more of the one on the left? There seems to be too much of a gap between the body and the tail fin: a touch more needed, I think. A much stronger background from Deb Raskin, with two strong fish, neatly placed beneath the reflected surface. Is the gold one breaking the surface? The head seems to have an extra brightness to it. I like the glow around it, reflected in the water - a very convincing image. Jimbean has set up an interesting contrast between the underwater fish and the parts of them that are breaking through to the air - it gives an extra sense of drama, highlighting the murkiness of the water. Would we see more ripples around the part that break the surface, though? Some neatly submerged fish from Lorenzo1977, with the surface glare well retained and a good sense of depth, particularly in the diving quality of the fish on the left. The gold fish could be brighter, I think: look at the amount of light glinting off the water. Splendid work from Garfield72, with a glowing carp and another slimmer, more submerged fish crossing its path. I like the added float - but why does the black top have a green reflection? A pair of very colourful fish from Vibeke, the one on the right especially looking nicely camouflaged. What are those stripes on the fish on the left, though? Are they a different set of surface reflections? Tricky to get rid of! An interesting pair of fish from joeysala, both clearly beneath the water. There seem to be bright spots on the underside of both, though, where I'd expect them to be more in shadow: I think the bottom edge would be more murky than this in each case. It might be that simply lowering the opacity does the job. A strong pair from munchonu, with a brightened background - but is it now too bright for those deep shadows on the fish? Congratulations in avoiding blood and gore altogether this week - it must have been quite a struggle for you! There's something about Deborah Morley's carp that makes me think of kippers... is it just the herringbone pattern? I like the way you've recoloured the brown one to make the gold one, and is that a touch of Puppet Warp to reshape it? Very fine underwater action from James, with the fish swimming neatly beneath one another - the movement of the body, the tail in particular, is most impressive. Now if only that water could be made to ripple... I like swans as much as Arijel does, but on the whole I think I prefer them with reflections. The arrangement of the scene is very good, with both swans' attention being taken by the fish - a great composition. My only small issue with it is that everything's just a little too neatly confined within the frame; I'd move the bottom fish down a little so it's partly out of shot, for a more realistic look. Very taken with brumtaffy's junk-strewn pond - I like the semi-submerged shopping trolley (although we should be able to see more of it beneath the surface, I think) and the lily pads. A couple of things confuse me: if that's a dog turd on the lily, how on earth did the dog get it there? And why are the hands holding the fishing rod so fuzzy? Tooquilos's lily pads add an extra dimension to the piece - but should the shadows be so strong, and all the way around? Rather than just appearing as dark reflections beneath them? Great tail wiggling in the animated version, and I like the high drama of the fishing sequence - After Effects filters running wild here! Is the wink in the final frame a reference to my avatar, by any chance? "Not easy" is Mariner's only comment - and indeed, it isn't. But there's a refreshingly different approach here: the dark green tinted water, the green fish looking quite at home in there (perhaps too much so). I like the extra shadowy fish you've accentuated here. But with most of the fish the same colour as the water, the one brown one does stand out as not quite belonging in the scene. I think this might be an all or nothing case. A variety of aquatic creatures from Marlcliff, including some very neatly submerged mechanical toys - I like the way they fit into the scene. But I'm very confused by that reflection in the top right: what is it? How can it be at that angle? And does it really add anything? A great brown fish from puffin31939 - but the gold one seems to be floating in air, rather than submerged in the water, and it's hard to pin down exactly why. Is it just that the edges are too sharp? Or should the bottom be blending into the water more? A feeding frenzy from Jota120, with a large quantity of carp competing for what's on offer. Since this uses a different background, I find it hard to tell what you've done here, Trevor - which I suppose is a compliment! _____________________ So here's the big reveal. I was interested by how the brown fish faded away into the water, but also by the strong glow on the gold one. You all came very close! ![]() |
