Challenge 404: Bring in the tide
I was walking along the banks of the Thames last week - you can see St Paul's Cathedral in the distance. It was at low tide, and when the river goes out it reveals a long stretch of pebble beach. This always reveals plenty of historic artefacts, such as broken clay pipes from the 18th Century, 19th Century hot water bottles, and so on. After all, people have been chucking their rubbish into the river for thousands of years.

Two possible challenges this week - take your pick:

a) What interesting object might have been revealed as the tide went out? Is there a wreck waiting to be discovered?

b) For those of you who prefer a more technical Challenge: can you bring the water in to high tide level?

High res is here.

You see, I like the idea of high tide level but I also like the idea of revealing interesting objects, but which is best? ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT.

Linda not sure if you know but if you sign up to and upload your hi Res pictures to a website such as http://photobucket.com/ then you can post a link to your picture on here. Not sure why your picture is so small. Did you select >Save for web and devices, in photoshop, and reduce image quality to about 30-50% while retaining 1000px size.

(I'm sure you knew this but thought I'd write it again anyway!)

Dear Artwel, I thank you very much for your advices. I don't understand why my Thames-picture is so small. The last two challenges (metro-station and ghost-bus) it was not a problem. The next time I'll try it with your advice "enregistrer pour le Web et les périphériques" (my photoshop and my cheat-photoshop-book are in French). Thank you for your lesson! Linda

It's a long time since I tried a Friday challenge, but I forgot my log on details. Hmmm... Image not loading. What's the max file size?

Re: Challenge 404: Bring in the tide
[EDIT] Guys I am not getting on so well with adding images. I had a small version which I uploaded to the HTCAP server, but tried to edit this post to include the larger version I have on flickr, but none of the usual HTM code seems to work, so I am going to have to add another post. Sorry. :-(

I give up. I've searched, I've viewed the source code on embedded images. I can't make it work.

That is really great Garfeild! So natural. Colour balance great. I spend a lot of time doing that. Again hats off to you.

Re: Challenge 404: Bring in the tide
Hi Trevor. It is good to see that some things never change. I have unsuccessfully tried to log on several times over the months, but I forgot my PW and the forum does not have one of those gizmos that flicks you out a new one. In the end I happened upon it by trying every PW I've ever used and could remember.

Yes, all is good in New Zealand, and I am pleased to see a CS6 version HTCAP is coming out. I wish Steve would write some more PS books.

Re: Challenge 404: Bring in the tide
Trevor, the maximum file size is 104kb but I find that if you go too close to that it throws it out.
95 kb always works for me.

Sorry, I should have said 102.4 kb.

Re: Challenge 404: Bring in the tide
Thanks Mariner. I did have the image uploaded to Steve's server at 600 pixels wide and 55kb (save for web always seems to save at a much lower size than you set).

It all went wrong when I edited that post because I wanted to hot-link to the larger version on my flickr site. I have seen a reference to doing that on this site, but can't find specific information, and the syntax. Is that still doable here? And if so, how?

[EDIT] OK I have worked it out, but it was a case of stumbling across the format after deciding to comment on a previous post, and seeing it in the quoted text. Thank's for your patience :-)

If you reply to Steve's introduction to the Friday Challenge it shows you how he links to his file. You should be able to amend it to point to yours. I did.

I tried to put an example here, but the server will not allow me to use <-- REMARK --> It converts the contents of the remark into a command.

Mike

All items used in my entry from my own photographs - I now reduce even the high res due to site size limitations and I had to remove a bunch of past entries in order to free up space.
