Challenge 406: Where there's a Mill
I'm indebted to GKB, aka Gordon Bain, for this week's image - a shot of a rather splendid water mill. Or, at least, it has been a splendid mill in the past, but frankly is now something of a tumbledown ruin.

Can you give this once charming building a new lease of life?

High res is here.

Thank you Josephine.

Sorry but, in the spirit of HTCIP, I cheated and did this a short time ago in anticipation

Nice cheat Gordon, but why so many lawn mowers? Baa! Baa!

Unless it's a bowling green.

Are you tempting me to include a limp body fastened to the underside of the waterwheel and maybe a chainsaw masochist appearing from the bay window, Artwell?

Re: Challenge 406: Where there's a Mill
Hi Artwell,

The photograph was taken at the beginning of May on the island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides near a place called Balephetrish. I was last there in 1957 and it was derelict then. As crofting was the main industry on the island in those days I assume it was used for grinding cereal for flour. I'm afraid that's all I can tell you.

The island itself is about 12 x 9 miles and can be reached by air from Glasgow and by sea from Oban. If it's peace and quiet you're looking for then you will get it here. The beaches are wonderful (particularly Gott Bay) with white sand and azure water that could make you believe you were in the Caribbean. The islands also hold the British record for the most sunshine.

Gordon

Artwel, I found it on Google Images and Flickr. It's called Cornaigmore Watermill, and is near Loch Bassapol. This should give you a new angle on the Challenge.

Re: Challenge 406: Where there's a Mill
Artwell and Mariner inspired me to investigate a little further.

In the second half of the 18th century landlords started investing in mills with vertical water wheels which were more efficient than horizontal mills and generated a greater income. The Cornaig mill was built by the 5th Duke of Argyll in 1803.

Although the water wheel was vertical, gears inside the mill turned the upper horizontal 'runner' stone over the stationary lower or 'nether stone. These were held together by a wooden spindle which was greased with beef suet.

The mill is fed by a lade that leads from nearby Loch Bhassapol. There is no date associated with the attached photograph but it looks as though it was shot around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.

The info on this great!! Thanks Mariner, Artwel and Gordon, very interesting. Ties in with my challenge very nicely (the video part) lol. Bearing this in mind, Gordon, I didnt realise the mill was built in early 1800s
