Challenge 409: Back in the game
I don't know if any of you have been following the European football championships, but England was knocked out of the contest this week by Italy - notably, by their star player Mario Balotelli (in blue). Perhaps it's time to bring back a soccer star from the past. I'm sure the one-time England ace Bobby Charlton would have managed to keep the ball at his feet. Can you put him in the picture instead of Ashley Cole, pictured here? Of course, he'd then have to be dressed in the kit England wore to win the 1966 World Cup for the image to have any plausibility whatsoever. High res (courtesy of Football.ua) is here. ![]() |

A real step back in time for me this week, not only with the football but my PC’s hard drive blow up so I had to dig out an old PC with Photoshop 7 installed (Pre CS) painful! But somehow adds to the retro feel of the image. ![]() |

Why look back? He is probably better than half the present lot at the age of 74. ![]() |

I can remember 1966, and the way I remember it, the photos in the papers were all black and white. ![]() _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 409: Back in the game
Once again time will beat me this week, but it's interesting to see the different take on Sir Bob, who was a childhood hero of mine. I recall being very disappointed after watching the 1968 European Cup final to learn that Man Utd had played in blue and not their 'Red Devil' strip. Very few had colour TVs back then, so we were none the wiser at that time. I recall my brother and I sitting watching the game in our United kit on an old Murphy B&W TV with pop-up lid and then running round the garden afterwards in great excitement (jumpers for goal posts and all that) Charlton, with Law, Best, Sadler, Stiles, Crerand, Stepney at al were a great team to watch and brought pride to the UK with a fantastic win over Benfica. Great days and there were few who could hit a ball like Charlton. A truly great player and legend. Frank - I'd love to know where you found that image and I've had no luck on Tineye. The Man Utd shirt had white collar and cuffs, whereas the England shirt didn't and you've added the badge brilliantly. Deborah - Sir Bobby Moore in Man Utd socks and England shirt. I wonder what he would have said about that! Up the ammers! Looking forward so see more during the week. |

Nick - I found that image on e-bay during an exhaustive search for anything half decent -- not sure when it was taken and I added the crest - it apppears the ball has changed over the years.(15th picture down) Frank http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=bobby+charlton+signed |

Re: Challenge 409: Back in the game
Hi Nick, I don't know how much you know about time travel, but when it was decided to use Bobby Moore as a secret replacement, things were done in rather a rush. The new content aware facility did not pick all of him up from 1966, and as it is impossible to visit the same time period within 24 hours, they had to stop off and pick up other parts from '68 and later. Bobby said he was very fond of those socks anyway. (Bobby socks, sorry). Short answer, I wandered who would notice the socks. |

On internet I once saw a picture like this. This is something alike I think. Ashamed as I am about the Dutch team, here is my screaming question: where were they? ... and I like yours a lot, Eva Roth! ![]() |

Honestly, I don't know jack about European football (I barely understand American football) - I'm not sure I even have the right guy. Sure hope so..... anyway, it's what I've got. ![]() _________________ "Art is a blade of grass ... and in a moment I will eat it." |

Cheers Sjef! Yes, incredible, a really big chance for Balotelli there... England had to be quick to spot the danger... |
