Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
I was visiting a hospital this week when I noticed a curved mirror, placed high up in the corner of a corridor. I was intrigued by the extreme distortion of the view. Can you remove me from the scene, and add someone else who matches the distorted view? I shot this on my iPhone, which was the only camera I had to hand, and that means the images is rather blurry and noisy - so you're going to have to try to match that as well. It's not going to be easy. Good luck! High res is here. ![]() |

You would think that people would be more considerate in a hospital, wouldn't you? ![]() _________________ You're never too old to learn something stupid. |

Re: Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
The lengthiest part of the image I have just posted was trying to find a suitable image of a man with a pneumatic drill; eventually I found one that worked reasonably well so I used it. Now, just as I post the image, I can hear a man with a pneumatic drill a few yards away from my house! He will never know how close he came to being a HTCIP star. _________________ You're never too old to learn something stupid. |

This one is really going to push me forward. And, Gordon, how did you make you image so quickly? I'm still trying to figure out how to remove Steve from the mirror. -Sara _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
Hi Sara, You don't actually need to remove all of Steve; much of him can be covered up by the new image and you can still use his shadow. But don't tell anyone - it's a secret! ![]() _________________ It only seems impossible. |

Re: Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
Thanks for the hint, Gordon! I just got back from my morning walk. I found 4 quarters, 4 dimes, a nickel and 6 pennies, scattered all along my walk. I expect to have an exceptionally lucky day. -Sara _________________ I'm still learning. |

http://vimeo.com/98252531 All the people in the video are from my Digital Juice Photo Knockouts Collection. Thousands of people in various poses, angles and situations. Fortunately they are all cut out and in .png format so it was just a case of reducing the size, creating the blurriness and adding them to the video. ![]() ![]() _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Anna - Loved the video! David - Gruesome, but funny. I wonder what Michael Sinclair will submit now that you've thrown down this gantlet. -Sara _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
When Gordon posted his hint, I decided to find a suitable figure to replace Steve. I found someone right away, but before I could even begin to work on my entry, Frank used the same figure I had found. My sister suggested I just sit this one out, but then I thought, "This is not a contest. I can look at this as an exercise in learning how to remove one figure, replace it with another and match the background." If I am successful at this, then I have accomplished something. The point is to learn how to do it, not to "wow" anyone. -Sara _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
Actually, now might be a good time to vindicate my real underlying motives, as I have sensibilities, and sensitivities that distinguish between acts of gratuitous violence in very bad taste on the one hand, and depictions that leave it to "one's imagination" on the other. A (the) case in point is the elephants, monkey, and vultures sequence: a monkey lying on the ground (it could have been sleeping for all I knew). and a photo of a clump of vultures--the deduction was yours! Not necessarily mine! BUT no gratuitous violence was actually shown! We hear and see atrocities been committed every day by madmen, and I'm truly sickened by it; therefore, regretfully, I cannot in anyway applaud or admire DavidMac's submission for this week; moreover, had I attempted this image Steve would have pulled it--no doubt about it! ![]() PS I'm (at last) now been relocated to my flat, and therefore, after tonight I won't have access to my computer until late Thursday at the earliest; therefore, my tarantulas might have to wait another day. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 509: The distorting mirror
Seeing Oneself Source: http://www.stockvault.net/photo/119035/sportsman I used this perfectly clean image of a man, then suitably blurred and added noise per Steve's instructions. The red and blue lines are directional lines such as found in my local hospital (e.g. follow the blue line to x-ray). Assuming convex mirrors do not always have a perfect surface, I added a bit of ripple distortion here and there. Question for Steve and others: Do you like a brief explanation as above describing how I manipulated the image, or would you prefer I said nothing and let the image speak for itself? Dan ![]() |
