Challenge 516: Le coq bizarde

I photographed this odd bird at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris (and if you're ever in Paris, it is a vastly better museum than its name might suggest).

The label on the glass case describes it as "Tête de coq bizarde", or "Head of a bizarre cockerel", and it dates from the 19th century.

Can you imagine what the rest of this bird might have looked like?

Note: For the next two weeks I will be disconnected for annual maintenance. I'll write up this, and the next two Challenges, on my return from a country with no computers. Well, maybe an iPad.

I was very intrigued by this weeks picture. I live in a French speaking country and speak French on a daily basis and have done so for many years, but had never, ever come across the word "bizarde". The normal french for bizarre is 'bizarre'.

So I asked a very literary French friend and he had never heard the word either. He was intrigued and did some research. It appears it is an ancient french word no longer in current use referring specifically to deformed antlers on deers.

It has absolutely no real english equivalent and so bizarre or deformed probably come as close as any.

So there we go. Another one for the trivia box. Could be useful if you ever play Scrabble in french ...........

The body for this bird is a dinosaur known as the Microraptor. Apparently, it was a terrific glider.

I am not going to be much of a presence for the next two or three weeks but here's a very simple quickie. Inspired by Linda's entry but not nearly as witty.
