Challenge 694: Chirality
Chirality, to save you reaching for your dictionaries, is the property of "handedness" - whether or nor an object matches its reflection. Gloves are chiral; socks are not.

(As a sidenote, chirality has many everyday uses, from turnbuckles which tighten ropes on ships by featuring two eye bolts threaded in opposite directions, to oxygen and NO2 tanks in operating theatres, on which the caps are threaded in opposite directions to avoid confusion.)

There was an interesting discussion on the forum here, that started with a photographer holding his camera in the wrong way and ended up with lwc's rather fine April Fool gag:

Can you create some other object that could benefit from being manufactured in a left-handed version? No starting image this week - the research project is all yours.

The fools, they all said that it couldn't be done ... you can't change the world all by yourself, they said ... but I did it.

Re: Challenge 694: Chirality
Mine is a bit obscure so I make no excuse for posting my inspiration - a song by Flanders and Swann called "Misalliance":
"The fragrant honeysuckle spirals clockwise to the sun,
And many other creepers do the same.
But some climb anti-clockwise, the bindweed does, for one,
Or Convolvulus, to give her proper name.

Rooted on either side a door, one of each species grew,
And raced towards the window-ledge above.
Each corkscrewed to the lintel in the only way it knew,
Where they stopped, touched tendrils, smiled, and fell in love.

Said the right-handed honeysuckle to the left-handed bindweed,
"Oh, let us get married, if our parents don't mind, we'd
Be loving and inseparable, inextricably entwined, we'd
Live happily ever after" said the honeysuckle to the bindweed.

To the honeysuckle's parents it came as a shock.
"The bindweeds," they cried, "are inferior stock!
They're uncultivated, of breeding bereft,
We twine to the right and they twine to the left."

Said the anti-clockwise bindweed to the clockwise honeysuckle,
"We'd better start saving, many a mickle macks a muckle,
Then run away for a honeymoon and hope that our luck'll
Take a turn for the better" said the bindweed to the honeysuckle.

A bee who was passing remarked to them then,
"I've said it before and I'll say it again,
Consider your offshoots, if offshoots there be,
They'll never receive any blessing from me".

"Poor little sucker, how will it learn,
When it is climbing, which way to turn?
Right, left, what a disgrace,
Or it may go straight up and fall flat on its face!"

Said the right-hand-thread honeysuckle to the left-hand-thread bindweed,
"It seems they're against us, all fate has combined.
Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Colombine,
Thou art lost and gone forever, we shall never intertwine".

Together, they found them, the very next day,
They had pulled up their roots and just shrivelled away.
Deprived of that freedom for which we must fight,
To veer to the left or to veer to the right!"

I'd forgotten that entirely until now. I remember going to see them as a boy ..........

CHIRALITY CHANGER

Do you ever wish you'd never started something? This proved much harder than I expected. It's far, far from right or good but, after so much struggle, I'm posting anyway. Steve can say what he likes ..... my back is broad ........ ish.

Re: Challenge 694: Chirality
Recently I read that Leonardo Da Vinchi did not write mirror image as a code, but simply because he was left-handed and it was easier for him. I have always thought that the contortions left-handed people go through in order to write surely must be the most inconvenient aspect of being left handed.

I have been working extra hours at work and I am creating the graphics for a convention. I just don't have the time to spend on this.

6 out of the 20 people that I directly work with, are left handed. Up until recently, it’s never occurred to me, some of the problems and obstacles they face in this right handed world. The Wacom tablets are forever being turned upside down so they can use it effectively. So as homage to all the left handed graphic artists, I have created entirely, in Photoshop, a left handed tablet while using a right handed Wacom!!
