Supplemental technical challenge
I noticed this row of four hooks recently, and was intrigued by the way the dual lighting produced interesting shadows. I've removed the shadows from the two central hooks. Can you reconstruct them? Note that this is an unnumbered technical Challenge, so you may want to give it a miss if the prospect bores you. I'll post the original image in a couple of weeks, when I get back from France. High res is here. ![]() |

Re: Supplemental technical challenge
Last time Steve did one of these lighting challenges I thought "Great! This has your name on it David. If, after fifty years of lighting movie sets, you can't do this, something is wrong". Well pride an' falls an' all that - I came a real cropper! What I thought was going to be incredibly close to the original proved to be much, much further away than I had expected. ![]() So this time I am approaching this with a great deal of circumspection. It's really hard to guess the details. Getting the colour right was tricky too. The usual transparent black in multiply mode doesn't work. It doesn't match the existing shadow colours. So I will simply say it's my best shot ....... with shaky hands ....... ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

A bit off topic - except it's about lights .....
Very nice Ant. A good few years back I was shooting a movie in one of the hill stations in India. It was the day before the rains started and something in the climate change brought out moths by their thousands. They were attracted to our lights. They swarmed on the white reflectors so densely that they became unusable. Dressed in light clothing I quickly became a target too. They also flew straight onto the lenses of our 12KW lamps where they became instantly baked on. The shoot had to be abandoned. No solvent was found that could remove the black baked on residue from the lenses without physically scraping and scratching them. Thousands of euros worth of lenses had to be scrapped. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Dave, Nothing like that but we had a bit of an outbreak of moths in my home office in the attic last year, amazing how such an unassuming creature can cause so much trouble |

Re: Supplemental technical challenge
I can remember moths as a problem as a child in England but never more recently. The solution was to be sure you had ... erm .... balls in your drawers .... ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Supplemental technical challenge
I’m astonished by the accuracy of DavidMac's entry i this seriously tricky technical challenge: the similarity between this and the real thing is amazing. If I wore a hat I’d take it off to you, David. An ingenious cheat from Ant Snell! And here’s the real thing: ![]() |

Re: Supplemental technical challenge
Yes well I ought to be able to do this, although I hadn't expected to get that close. The shadow shapes are easy enough, you can pretty much work it out, but predicting the densities was pure guesswork and there I was less accurate. Thanks Steve. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Supplemental technical challenge
David, that is extraordinary. Beautifully done. I took one look at this challenge and thought this is way out of my league _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |
