Challenge 734: Mars attacked
NASA's Insight lander touched down on Mars this week, and sent back this rather lacklustre image. Somehow I was expecting more from Mars. Can you oblige?

High res is here.

A quickie too. Very strapped for time this week so please forgive very primitive 3D on the tripods.

Nicely done Anna. That’s a neat trick reflecting the lander to fill out the frame to the right.

Re: Challenge 734: Mars attacked

This got a bit subdued with the jpeg compression, or it might just be the filter on the camera .
(I couldn't find my last Mars rover entry from a few years back (strange) otherwise it might have joined in).

Another great video from Anna with beautiful and appropriate music, spoiled briefly by some shouting noises. Well done Anna!

Agree. I like the colours too, didn't notice shouting.

Re: Challenge 734: Mars attacked
When the sky is clear here see Mars early evening (I think, no telescope, but confirmed below, see link), amongst the stars. The constellations of Plough and Orion we're very impressive 3 days ago. Interesting to see how their inclinations change through the seasons of the year. The Plough now is the Big Dipper and Orion stands upright.

Re: Challenge 734: Mars attacked
First to touch down on the red planet this week was lwc - and it really is red, with a startling shimmering effect and some great fiery gases. And I enjoyed the predatory second entry, particularly the animated reflection in the side.

Very cute Martians from DavidMac, the colour blending perfectly with the original. Primitive 3D? It works perfectly. Great reflection. And a topical second entry - that’s a fine array of hand-holding critters. The ingenuity of the third entry is in the absolute realism of the result - you’d be hard pressed to tell this was a montage.

Fake news exposed by Ben Mills - I like the recolouring to match the new environment. That’s a very colourful bird you’ve got there. It’s almost otherworldly…

A whole feature film from GKB, with a seriously cute Martian vaporising the lander. Very funny work, and a terrific soundtrack. Where did Marvin the Martian come from? Did you model him, as well as his flying saucer?

A nod to ancient history from Ant Snell - and yes, of course I remember the Clangers, an influential part of my childhood. Great Meccano extras in here - that chicken is fantastic. What, no soup dragon?

Subtle renovation from Mariner: I like how we now see the end of the tube on the right, as well as the general sprucing-up of the equipment. That’s a rather splendid owl - but don’t you think those eyes are somewhat cartoony?

A cunningly extended lander from tooquilos, through the simple expedient of flipping - although I’d nudge then a pixel closer together to avoid the join. A spectacular title sequence, and a clever mix of live footage and animation. Great 3D work on the landing - and I like the Martian city. Wonderful.

A fun pun from Vibeke, with the lander heading for a distant bar - ingenious! I like the subtlety of the two tiny Martians, and the great sense of scale. Perhaps the lander should be a little redder, to match its surroundings?

It seems Jota120's lander has taken a wrong turn and ended up in Nevada - but it does seem quite at home there.

Good to see michael sinclair’s 10-year-old animation again. I enjoyed that one, and still do.

A very cute alien from srawland, with a subtle soundtrack. I like the final perch on the lander, and especially the diffuse reflection. Is this Fuse? Does it do Martians? Great work.
