Challenge 743:Carry on Ely
I photographed this vintage Morris Minor in the Norfolk town of Ely recently, attracted by both the car and its immediate surroundings. Something about this scene put me in mind of 1970s British comedies. Who knows what mischief is taking place behind those drawn curtains? Time to put on your director's hat. High res is here. ![]() |

Hard to find high enough resolution images of these classics so obliged to keep image quite small. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 743:Carry on Ely
![]() I know that my efforts for this challenge are not really "on brief" as you call it, but the "Carry On" series of films are new to me. The British programs that were available locally were pretty much limited to Benny Hill, Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. I know nothing of the storyline of Carry On..... I found one actress (Shirley Eaton) that I recognized and she was listed as having a part in at least one of the films, so I used her picture for the girl in the window. |

Carry On Afterdark
Well that's it for my WC efforts... using Shirley Eaton again to get as close to being on brief as I can get. I did go for "extra points" though. ![]() ![]() |

Well done on sourcing all those figures Frank. I know from my own researches it is hard to find much beyond portraits looking straight at camera mostly in tiny 300px resolutions. Of course it may just be that I am not a terribly good researcher ....... Either way I am impressed. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 743:Carry on Ely
This is not an entry Steve ..... it's a diversion ....... In the mid 80's I made some commercials for a Belgian bank based on the idea of customer confusions as to how best profit from their bank. They chose to symbolise this by a car which didn't know which direction it should drive in. We used a Morris Minor with two back ends and no front. Nowadays this would be done in 3D or with digital mirroring in post. Back then digital post was still in its infancy so we did it the way we did most special FX in those days - physically with engineering. We bought two old Morris Minors and quite literally cut them in half and welded the two backs together. The wheels needed to be seen spinning - fighting against each other with the car bucking back and forward. As there was no longer any engine we installed hydraulic motors in the two boots and passed the flexible supply hoses through a hole in the rear side of the car and from there through the wall behind it. It was so much more fun and challenging to do things this way than the more sterile approach of modern post! Over thirty years later this bizarre creation still exists and graces the cafeteria of the National Motor Museum! 'Scuse poor quality image - it's lifted from PAL video. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 743:Carry on Ely
Thanks David, it took quite awhile to find any usable images and even then quality was suspect. At first I thought of throwing in the towel but decided to try and make them work. I got some from Pinterest by the way. That's quite the story above and yes would be so easy to do digitally today. |
