Challenge 758: Harrogate Sunday Pullman
On my visit to Bressingham Steam Museum a few weeks ago I was intrigued by this empty case. I assume it was intended to hold some sort of model train, but who knows? Can you enlighten me? I'd love to see an animated exhibit in there. High res is here. ![]() |

Another quickie. First image with CC19 and the new Mac. More of that later in another post. It's going to take some getting used to .......... Although the new machine is fired up and CC installed there is a vast amount of copying and loading from backups to do and a ton of other software to move and re-register. Then when that is done the old MacPro to set up for my wife. So, once again, no time for serious entries this week it's going to be quite busy. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 758: Harrogate Sunday Pullman
Aaaaah Gordon ..... the sights, sounds and smells of my childhood. Feeling the platform tremble under my feet when they let off steam in a dark soot blackened St Pancras. Running from one side of the (traffic free) bridge to the other to catch the smoke both sides. The thunderous joy of racing full steam!!! It's lodged deep in the psyche of British males our age. It's one thing I was never able to explain to my children who never saw anything bigger than a little puff puff locomotive on a restored branch line. I had one of those mothers who collected and kept their children's drawings and things. I discovered this in a draw after she died. She had written on the back that it was painted when I was eleven years old. It now hangs on the wall of my workroom. Seems I could already get the idea of a vanishing point ........ I just hadn't quite got the hang of how they work! ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Simple and lovely Loyd. Love the strong foreground and the moody lighting. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Happily we have a preserved steam line just 20 minutes drive from my home; The Bluebell Line. I went there to shoot the video for my ‘Royal Tour’ video a couple of weeks ago and re-used it for this week’s Challenge. Such a shame that there is no way to include the smell in the video. _________________ Time flies like an arrow but fruit flies like a banana. |

Gordon, I was wondering just yesterday if that was one of your videos, I had a feeling that it was... very nice. The closest steam powered train to me is in Durango, Colorado. Thanks for your comment David, I appreciate it. Having your own childhood painting is quite wonderful and hanging on your wall makes it even better. About the only thing from my childhood that I have is my 1951 Lionel electric train. I'll have to dig it out of the storage closet and have a look. |

Re: Challenge 758: Harrogate Sunday Pullman
When I was a boy Lionel was the Rolls Royce of miniature railways. The British equivalent was Hornby. But Lionel was what we all aspired to. It had American locos with cow catchers 'n stuff. For us that was the height of cool .......... I have a feeling that, if it is in good condition, you might just be sitting on a collector's item. I am beginning to sound like some kind of railway fanatic. I am absolutely not........ ........ but every British boy of my generation wanted to be a train driver. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 758: Harrogate Sunday Pullman
Well, I found the train set, but it had no Pullman car. I took a couple of photos anyway and used them in this entry. The instruction manual was in the old suitcase with it and apparently the manual had to be purchased at 35 cents each, up from 25 cents in 1950. I used scans from pages in the manual to make the signage. According to the Lionel History website the '51-'53 (Engine #2026) version is the most common with little to modest value, 1953 was the last production year for this "Prairie" locomotive. The engine heated little white tablets to make the smoke and the tender contained the whistle. Here it is cow-catchers and all. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 758: Harrogate Sunday Pullman
beautiful entries this week! I’m afraid my Harrogate Pullman had to be cancelled due to an impending appointment for HPB surgery. Hopefully I should be able to rejoin the forum very soon… |

Eva, Just take things one day at a time. Be present, now. It's hard to keep up especially if you are fretting. But, really, this moment now is all we have. The past is gone and the future is not guaranteed to any of us. If the problem can be fixed, there is no need to worry. If the problem cannot be fixed, then worrying will not change that fact. _________________ I'm still learning. |

I know I have lots more time to work on this, but I have a Civil Service exam I need to study for and that takes precedence over creating animations. This one scares the bejeezus out of me and I'm the one who created it. Many thanks to Carmsie who uploaded such wonderfully spooky soundclips onto Freesound.com.
