Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Right, you've had your fun with the polychaete. Time for some serious restoration work. This week's starting image is the gateway at Surgeres, in France, which looks like this: ![]() It was altered in the 18th century. Previously, and rather surprisingly, the gateway looked like this: ![]() Can you restore it to its earlier appearance? High res is here. |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Well David, this one is harder than the one you gave me, isn't it? I mean, there are buildings in the drawing which no longer exist, the proportions are way out, and one of the arches is missing. A fun job. |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Thought you'd like this. I tried to take the photo from as close as possible to the location in the drawing, but the artist seems to have taken liberties with the location of the round tower on the right. Looking forward to seeing what you end up with, Michael! |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Michael and Steve. Yes. The artist has been less than accurate and although Steve has done his best he would need to be on a tall stepladder to match the artists eye height. I think trying to create a perfect re-creation is a road to nowhere. It's more a matter of 'flavour' - an artists impression if you will. As entries go this is pretty dull. But it is on brief. Much more fun to do than to look at. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
David, your entry is not dull at all to me. I think it is excellent. Surely part of the reason we do these challenges is to show off and improve our skill in what can be a very difficult discipline, photo manipulation. In this particular challenge, having fun takes second place. Your image shows you to be very skillful indeed. This puts me in a bit of a quandry: because you have done exactly what I was intending to do it's taken some of the shine off my intentions. So I will try and find another angle which allows me to create an original image. |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Having fun matters very much to me otherwise I wouldn't be bothering with the challenges. Which is probably why my entries are so variable in quality. If I am not enjoying a challenge I am unlikely to do it well. To be honest Michael this 're-construction' is thrown together by eye and instinct. Not much analysis or intellect was involved. I tend to work by gut feeling. This image lent itself perfectly to my rather basic 'kitchen sink' approach.
I am sorry. That certainly wasn't my intention. ![]() I did a quick google on 'Surgeres Gateway' and there are lots of similar but slightly different images you could have a go with. (Although I didn't check their resolution). Good luck! ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David, Of course you should have fun. So do I. You have time to do another couple. No apologies needed, everything is well in hand, I will post on Thursday as usual. |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
David, I wondered why you didn't put those figures in the first time. It was so obvious, wasn't it? Now you have turned your picture into something rather attractive. At risk of sounding like Steve I think you should give that building on the far LHS some depth as it looks very flat. Its roof seems to be sloping the wrong way and It should have a visible side like the outhouse above it, or at least have an inset window perhaps with a sill, and maybe a vase. |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Basically I have followed the artist as much as possible but his drawing is full of inaccuracies so it is very hard to know what to do with some parts. If by far LHS you mean the little outhouse (toilet?) with the dormer beyond, I think they are quite correct. However the part of the artist's drawing I couldn't quite fathom was the near LHS. I have chosen to treat it as a kind of tile topped pilaster probably no more than a foot deep. In the end it's full of anomalies that quite simply couldn't be resolved between drawing and photo. As Steve pointed out the tower height is completely non consistent. I didn't add the people before because I ran out of time. I was able to come back to it today and do some more. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Sorry, I meant to write "near LHS", the outhouse just behind the basket. The artist just gets away with that by shading the wall. Maybe you should ignore the rather second rate artist and add a new outhouse? |

Re: Challenge 778: The gateway at Surgeres
Yes. Thats the one! It's so ambiguous in the drawing I couldn't really make out what it was. I don't really like fiddling entries after submission. I've done it once with this already. I'll let it rest warts 'n all. ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

The drawing is incorrect. It started to rain so the artist went home and completed the work from memory. ![]() ![]() |
