Challenge 816: Prone in Gloster
Another image from my visit to RAF Cosford back in December, this one is the nose cone of a Gloster Meteor. It's an experimental plane, designed to see how a pilot could cope while lying in a prone position to counter the effects of gravity on the pilot and reduce drag on the plane (you can read more about it here). What other vehicles might benefit from this approach? High res is here. ![]() |

For a change I will disregard the photograph and search my fevered brain for another vehicle, or vehicles. ![]() |

DIVERSION - NOT AN ENTRY
I haven't done a thing to this .... it's real! "The infamous ‘bathing suit’ photo of Rollie Free doing 150mph on a Vincent Black Shadow in 1948. He claimed stripping to his trunks gave him 2.3mph, enough to reach the magic 150. That’s the poetry of the epic ‘bathing suit’ photo, but there was a man aboard that Vincent, who had a very long relationship with motorcycles, speed, and even that fully prone riding position. Rollie Free had several unique qualities; a fiercely competitive nature (considered ‘borderline insane’), a burning desire for vengeance against Harley-Davidson (which reneged on a promise of factory support), and his dogged persistence, especially in the years he spent developing his engine tuning skills. Rollie Free engendered loyalty among his friends, and an incredulous admiration from his enemies. He was the perfect nut-job, just the sort of guy who would strip down to his swimming trunks to squeeze an extra mile per hour on his speed attempt, regardless of the highly abrasive salt bed just below his wheels." ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

This B-29 landed at an airport near my house last week and I had to get a few shots. Posted here only because this weeks Meteor challenge made me think of it. 'Doc' is one of two still flying in the world today. ![]() |

Great prop blur Loyd. I see so many images from air shows where the photographer has rattled away using 2000th sec and frozen airborne props solid. You've hit the sweet spot with this one. Nick |

Thanks Nick, this was shot at 1/60th/sec. I had high hopes for some puffy white clouds for some infrared snaps, but it was an overcast gray day. |

Re: Challenge 816: Prone in Gloster
Many people in Oz celebrate Christmas in July. I can barely cope with one Christmas let alone two in a year. So Christmas in July is the inspiration for this week's challenge. I know, I know it has the aerodynamics of a brick but Santa sprinkled magic dust on it and it can fly! http://vimeo.com/441763244 ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |
