Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
I'm indebted to GKB for this week's starting image - a perfect example of a fly agaric mushroom, captured in a forest.

Whenever I see these mushrooms I'm reminded of the cover of Tintin and the Shooting Star:

In the book, Tintin travels to a fallen meteorite which has seemingly magical powers, producing giant mushrooms and, at one point, giant spiders. Fly agaric are, of course, well known for their hallucinogenic quality.

Can you recreate the Tintin cover using Gordon's mushroom? The choice of who you get to stand in for Tintin and Snowy is up to you.

High res is here.

I loved these comics and this particular one was one of my favourites. These guys could really illustrate a story properly.

Looking forward to the out come. Nice challenge Steve.

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
In the late sixties when I first started to get asked to Paris to shoot for French agencies and production houses I spoke nothing but the most basic schoolboy French. The companies would always provide me with an English speaking assistant.

I decided I should try to learn. So I went to a bookstore and bought the entire set of Tintin books. I still have them now. It proved a surprisingly effective learning tool. The text is colloquial and unsophisticated everyday French and the pictures help you guess the sense without the discouraging tedium of being constantly buried in the dictionary.

BTW. Since you are a lover of Trivia (and caught me out with your three Belgian detectives joke) in the original French Snowy is called Milou. Another one for the pub quiz.

And Thomson & Thompson were called Dupont & Dupont. The different spelling in English was clearly an invention of the translator.

Indeed they were!

My internet router is on the blink so I might not be able to do this one.

Looks great David...

Since Tintin is new to me, anything I post is going to be hit or miss. My knowledge is limited to what has been written here and Wikipedia.

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
Plenty of image sources on Google and Bing Loyd but that's no help if you're not familiar with the series of books.

Anyway I think the Tintin route was just a suggestion. It's not integral to the challenge. I would go wherever you please. My second post which I was just about to post when I saw this has absolutely nothing to do with Tintin.

Coming up in a few minutes.

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
This is prompted entirely by the fact that it was ace aeronaut Gordon who provided this weeks picture.

It's truly and utterly silly ..............

Very clever David... "Fly Agaric"... I didn't see that coming at all.

A non-animated version...

I'm so out of touch, I didn't even know there was a 2011 movie.

Monsieur Spielberg's version. Since TinTin is as Belgian as moules frites it premiered here in Brussels. Big brouhaha with Spielberg and all the stars ........

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
Lovely stuff David....and that mushroom fits in there perfectly.

Loyd, you can't tell that you're not familiar with Tintin. What you've posted is spot on.

I'm the one that's not following script this time. No mushroom in sight. It hasn't grown yet.

This is right up your street Tom. Tintin becomes Tagore ........

I love the light from above. Very accomplished.

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
When I posted my earlier image (now removed) I didn't realise until a day later that I had not read Steve's brief completely and I that I was supposed to be producing a cover, not just a Tintin Image.

Now we all take briefings broadly, or even more or less ignore them, as did I in my aviation entry. Since I had chosen in this instance to go the true Tintin comic strip (sorry graphic novel) route it was only proper that I should follow the brief to the letter and produce a cover as requested. Its much more fun like that anyway!
