Challenge 882: The Wizard of Christchurch
Last month Ian Brackenbury Channell was sacked from his job. For the last 23 years he had been the official Wizard of Christchurch, New Zealand. The 88-year-old had been paid an annual salary of $16,000 to perform his wizarding antics to, I imagine, Vibeke and her neighbours.

Here he is courtesy of Wikipedia, preaching to an enthusiastic crowd. Can you give the poor man a more appropriate setting for his ministrations?

High res, such as it is, is here.

On a train to Munich. Will be there until next Thursday evening. So I shall be missing this one. Pity looks fun.

Karekare here we come!

With the exception of Vibeke don’t pretend you didn’t have to look it up. Google, however, is unlikely to mention that David Mac nearly drowned there. It is thanks to the wonderful volunteer lifeguards that he is able to take part in these challenges.

Very grateful to our wonderful lifeguards for that. A very dangerous beach (coast) to swim at.

Ha, I have to look up everything that is more than twenty miles from my home. Unfortunately, Wikipedia and Google aren't always totally accurate. Sometimes I catch mislabeled images but not always.

Glad your lifeguards were paying attention...

We were being careful and obeying the rules, swimming only where the flags indicated it was safe to do so. Nonetheless nine people, including me, were swept out to sea by a freak undertow. I was in my mid thirties, fit and strong, and I had never in my life felt myself in the grip of something so powerful and irresistable or felt so utterly weak and helpless.

By pure chance it was the lifeguards’ annual barbecue and thirteen of them hit the water at once. Everyone was saved. Had it been a normal day with the usual two on duty a good few lives would have been lost including, I have absolutely no doubt, my own.

I learned that they were trying to raise the money to buy a zodiac inflatable boat with a powerful outboard motor. When I got back to England I sent them a thousand pounds towards the cost. That was a goodly sum in the late seventies but, in return for my life, it seemed a very modest gesture indeed. I received a letter of thanks from the club Commodore in which he said, to my astonishment, that they very rarely heard again from people they saved and that mine was the largest single donation they had ever had. Some years later I met him in London and he said that he thought most people feel stupid and even embarrassed at having allowed themselves to get into such a situation and simply wanted to forget it.

Human nature can be vary strange at times!

I'm impressed David, by your generosity and sadly most people who are saved do not donate.
Not being a strong swimmer I have never gone swimming at those beaches but I had a son who was a keen surfer and he spent a lot of time in the waves and love our strange black sand beaches. Which was only 15km from where we lived.

After his retirement, locals started a 'Go fund me' page and raised enough money to commission a statue for his yard.

Thanks David...!

This challenge has gotten completely out of control, I now have nine more finished entries. Really a fun challenge, the ideas are coming two or three a day. Obviously I must keep the count down and choose only a few more... Steve would ban me forever if I posted all of them...
