Challenge 960: On the canal
You can't go to Birmingham without visiting one of the canals that winds through the city, and I was pleased to find that they have been preserved almost entirely as they were when they were first built.

This is Peaky Blinders territory, of course. But where are the canal boats? And the fog?

High res is here.

Thanks Loyd - and a nice job on your quickies -
I'm sure they'll be more to follow

Fog? No London particulars in Brum!
They really have made the canal area beautiful now - I remember when it was as rough as a badgers bottom

Just for that Frank, I'll steal your idea and make it a cyanotype...

Lots of nice stuff so far.

I have to confess to never having seen peaky blinders but I see we are all finding the same on line PR stills. I'm glad I eventually didn't use the gun on shoulder one. I was going to put it in exactly the same position as Loyd. It sort of cried out for it! But then I got a bit carried away and thought the challenge trying to build and light the cigarette lighting was more fun.

Re: Challenge 960: On the canal
This rather uninspired looking image is another of my self imposed technical challenges. I quite simply wanted to see if I could achieve a really convincing realistic fog that thickened with distance. An 'if you didn't know would you guess?' image.

You must all be the best judge of whether I have succeeded.

David - I had to immediately look up peaky blinders, it is totally unknown in the USA, or at least in my world.

Lighting of the cigarette looks great... adds a bit of drama to the scene. The original stills photographer missed a bet with that one.

I would say that the fog looks realistic... nicely done!

Thanks Loyd. I enjoyed both. I like these purely visual challenges from time to time.

The internal battle with AI continues in my mind. But during this challenge, I came to some type of truce.
If I treat it as another tool, then it doesn't seem as threatening. This week's image - one of them is entirely created by AI, with the exception of the statue in the water.
The other is AI free and I'm pleased with both of them.

David, the fog is excellent, not to mention the placement of the barge - which is perfect.
And Tommy lighting the cigarette is fabulous.

Re: Challenge 960: On the canal
Anna I love the statues decorating the barge but there's something a bit off in the perspective. It's sinking at the back. 🤨

I'm beginning to think that AI is much better at funky rustic than clean modern .... somehow it's, sometimes truly bizarre, mistakes get more easily absorbed and hidden.

Nice work everybody.

Anna, great work, but why is your barge sinking?

I have twinned Birmingham with Ghent or is it Bruges?

Re: Challenge 960: On the canal
It appears to be a horizontally flipped Bruges. A really perfect seamless tonal and architectural match Michael!

This could have had me completely fooled except the reflections and foreground bench perspective don't quite convince as well as the rest.

Slickest water I've ever seen Michael... interesting image. The boat might be rocking a bit fast in relationship to the water.
