Challenge 995: Fatboy's Diner
This splendid American diner is at Trinity Buoy Wharf, an arty area of studios and workshops in London, on the Thames opposite the Millennium Dome (or whatever it's called these days). Sadly the diner is now closed, possibly because it belongs on a dusty mid west highway at twilight. Can you resurrect this classic? High res is here. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 995: Fatboy's Diner
Well done Ben! You have got round a huge difficulty with this image which is not immediately apparent. You've got us off to an excellent start. When I first saw it I thought it would be easy to simply 'transplant' the diner elsewhere. However, presumably because of physical restrictions when taking the photo, Steve has used a very wide angle from close up. The image has the perspective from hell when it comes to placing it elsewhere. The only option I can see is to cut out just the front facade and roof elements, restore the parts obscured by planters and rebuild in the context of the new surroundings. Which is precisely what you have done. Well this weekly exercise is a challenge so why not? I shall be very interested to see if anyone can find a way to do a simple 'as is' relocation. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

UNDER NEW OWENERSHIP. In this part of the world Fatboy’s is a cheap Pound Land type shop, full of everything no one wants, and usually water damaged or broken. Fill your basket for 50p. Couldn’t have a shop like that, associated the Fonz. ![]() |

Beautifully integrated, Ben. The market place at the end of your video looks fascinating. I'd love to explore that. David, the fog and the lighting is excellent. It reminds me of that painting, Boulevard of broken dreams. The Fonz works so well, Ant. http://vimeo.com/921652740 ![]() _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Re: Challenge 995: Fatboy's Diner
Well eating my words has become a positive banquet! I had become very frustrated trying to match Steves photo to existing perspectives. What I had failed to appreciate was that if the background is sufficiently neutral without imposing a perspective of it's own, especially if it is very dark, the incoming photo will dominate and dictate it's own perspective. Very educational. Two lovely images with interesting nighttime lighting. Exciting start. Anna you mentioned 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'. Although my image was not consciously modelled on it, it's exactly what I had in my mind when I predicted 'Hopperish' images in my first opening comment. Last week I mentioned that 'Steam punk' picture searches were dominated by AI images. This week I found 'Desert landscape at night' and 'Lonely Gas Station in Wilderness' are very popular too and brought up a whole new slew of AI images. Some openly declared and some not declared but entirely obvious. I haven't looked into it any deeper yet but I am wondering if my speculations on popular subjects is wrong and that we are going to find picture searches in all but the most banal subjects are going to be increasingly flooded with AI. I have to confess I hope not. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Hi David, thank your for your comments. I love the atmosphere and the lighting balance in your fog image. Thank you for you comment Anna, looks like our diners may be similarly located, both look around Arizona. I have added a visual clue to the location in the second image. |

Re: Challenge 995: Fatboy's Diner
Great work everyone…! Many fun and entertaining images. Ben, I was particularly fascinated by your references to Route 66, I live about four miles north of ‘old 66’ as it’s known locally. I spent a lot of time on Route 66 over the years and almost every town had at least one diner. The infrared image posted here was made in 2020 of a local diner about six miles from me, it was a very popular spot for many years. It was closed forever the following week when the owners retired and declined to sell it to anyone. Certainly not an entry in this week’s challenge, as a matter of fact, I have thought of nothing that is amusing, artistic, or even remotely clever for an entry so far. ![]() |

My first entry is based in Cottonwood 48 miles south of Flagstaff. Took the shot while on a drive from Houston to Phoenix via Sedona. |

Good to see an IR image from you, Loyd. I haven’t shot any IR for a while now. Might get some images during this summer when I can walk properly. _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |
