Challenge 1037: The organ grinder
Liverpool may have had The Beatles, but La Rochelle has its organ grinder. He sang chansons as he turned the handle. I like the fact that he dressed up for the occasion, but I find that blue cloth rather distracting. How could you help him to up his game in terms of appearance? High res is here. ![]() |

The headset too. Pity. Presumably the cloth is hiding the amplifier. Something about the undecorated simplicity of the organ makes me think it's a modern re-incarnation of a traditional instrument. Where does he get the perforated fanfolds? Does he make them himself? Is there a punch machine for it? If I am right about the instrument they presumably supply them too. Standard catalogue or can you order them from your own score? Such a simple photo poses so many questions ........... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

A bit crude perhaps, but then it is just a quickie... besides, he likes the way he is dressed. ![]() |

I looked at that monkey too but he looked so mangy and distressed I passed him over! ![]() ![]() Of course nowadays animal rights and political correctness means they are all stuffed toys anyway. Trumpky anyone? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Not quite what I wanted, but definitely more traditional. A surprisingly difficult rebuild. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

There were very few monkeys to choose from and I was in a hurry. I agree, he is a poor example. |

I like your decorations David. Good idea! His spare top hat needs a litle work. Perforated fanfold paper has been around for over fifty years. They used it in teleprinters. Do they still have teleprinters I wonder. |

Re: Challenge 1037: The organ grinder
Computer fanfold had perforated edges which engaged with sprockets to drive it through the teletype. My first printer in the early seventies was a Diablo teletype. A massive noisy beast which worked with plain paper or fanfold (Fanfold transport on left). It used ribbon and daisy wheels which had the type face embossed on them. To change font you changed the daisy wheel. ![]() Organ fanfold is a quite different beast with slots perforated all across its width which allow the air through to the pipes. When I was a boy I had a friend who had a pianola. It also worked on air but with perforated paper rolls. ![]() I have discovered that there are apps which will convert music to printed barrel organ templates which can then be cut out by hand. That's what you call a labour of love! Sorry Steve for the off topic(ish) diversion. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Dodgy memory. It was very early eighties. I bought my Tandy TRS80 in the USA in '78 and brought it back to the UK. The Diablo, also bought in the 'States, followed a year or two later. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1037: The organ grinder
One of the classic PG chimps spots! I shot a couple of those. The trainers were a husband and wife team who used have the most incredible rows on set! Between them and the chimps it could get pretty hysterical. Sometimes you didn't know whether to laugh or look the other way and pretend it wasn't happening .......... ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
