Challenge 1043: On board the Mauretania
One of the galleries in the Museum of Liverpool details the city's maritime past, with boat building strongly featured. Among the exhibits was this rather lacklustre mockup that tries to give an idea of the sophistication of life aboard the Mauretania.

Surely we can do better?

High res is here.

Steve, I think you mean RMS Mauritania which was scrapped in 1935, according to Wikipedia.

I’m pretty sure my spelling is correct – look at the lifebelt.

Re: Challenge 1043: On board the Mauretania
This ship is constantly misspelt (or misspelled if you want more spelling confusions ). References and pictures are everywhere with the 'i' spelling.

It was, in fact, named after the ancient Roman province of Mauretania in North Africa from which, just to add to the confusion, the modern African country of Mauritania also derived its name. Probably the main source of confusion.

When I look at Steve's picture and pictures of the splendour and luxury of the real thing, I can't help asking myself "Why?".

The classic steamer chair and blanket was to be found on just about any boat of that period. The dress and parasol appear to come from a real passenger but they don't exactly exude class and glamour.

What on earth did its creators intend this drab, lacklustre little diorama to convey!?

Sneaky way to avoid having to remove the original figure or too much of sign Ben!

It's really hard to know what to do with this aside from exactly what you have done so nicely.

Now where did I leave my sideways thinking cap?

I had already removed the figure & the sign when I decided to go this way! Thanks David.

My "sideways thinking cap" may be on too tight.

I was really stuck on this one ....... then it occurred to me it was an appropriate setting for Belgium's famous detective.

Poirot. Good thinking, David. I like the lighting effects, the barely visible sun and water reflections. It took a while to clean up the floor and the fence, I'll bet. Good work.

Very good choppy sea Michael. Shouldn't the boat be going up and down a bit?

Well that's fun Michael.

Shouldn't it be Gene and Cyd, or Fred and Ginger?

Well you know lightings is my thing. I love doing it. In enjoyed this one. Particularly because I was really stuck for an idea.

I am far from the only one who had to deal with floorboards. The railing and chair were a fiddly cut out. I couldn't find successful 'automatic' way. Hand cut with the lasso.

It was fun trying to find a corpse I could fit. Because he was profile and full length Poirot had to be built from two completely separate pictures of him.

I keep moaning here about on line pictures always being looking straight at camera or even harder smiling or grinning at straight camera but I have been completely unable to find any kind of search parameters or controls to avoid this. I've tried 'till I am blue in the face but nothing I can dream up works. If any of you out there know a clever wheeze I would love to here it!!
