Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
I don't know if Punch and Judy shows are known in other countries, but in the UK they're something of a seaside tradition. I found this rather cute booth at a steam rally last weekend, and it's just begging to be opened up to a crowd of admiring children.

High res is here.

While researching I stumbled, quite by chance, upon this. It appears to be the site for the self same booth featured in Steve's photo!

Re: Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
There were so many wonderful old images that turned up during my research that I was compelled to make my own version...

Not animated.

Many Punch and Judy illustrations and paintings found were interesting… this one edited with apologies to Edward Robert Smythe.

Somewhere I still have a plaster head Punch puppet from 1952. Judy didn't survive the DV.

The sepia ones are terrific Loyd.

Gordon and Michael, very appropriate and well done.

Mariner, the second one is most convincing. Looks like it belongs there.

That's an interesting take on it, Ben.

Yes, Anna, there was one there until I removed it. Well spotted.

Some excellent work again this week

This was one that I just had to animate

I have removed this video in light of events in Los Angeles and replaced it with a modified version

Love your lightning Anna. you wanna team up with that MacDonald guy and produce a movie together.

Ahh Gordon--Lights, camera, and action --perhaps with a bit more violence!

Wow!! So much stuff so quickly. Less politics than I expected given that Punch and Judy are a gift in this respect. Can't possibly comment on everyone, but Michael (Sinclair) I just love the crisp old fashioned quality of yours - best thing I've seen from you for a while. Michael (t'other) a totally convincing fit - If I didn't know I would never guess. Really Spooky clown from Anna. Others all great too!

Re: Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
STYLIST - INFLUENCER TEAM BRINGS PUNCH AND JUDY INTO THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY.

As can be seen from Steve's deserted photo, Punch and Judy have not been attracting a crowd. The fall from popularity has been largely attributed to the simple hand puppets being too crude and primitive for today's generation of 'digital' children. The show has also attracted much criticism for misogyny and 'inappropriate aggression'.

Anxious to make his show more attractive the puppeteer has called in the services of a of a stylist and an influencer to give the show a more contemporary feel. Whether they will succeed has yet to be seen when the show re-opens for the first time.

Commenting on their makeover, Lindsey and Spence said "We have replaced the primitive hand puppets with animatronics. The technically sophisticated kids of our time have high expectations. But, far more importantly, we have given Punch and Judy a more relevant contemporary styling that will communicate well on social media, and we have made the booth itself more 'instagrammable".

Puppeteer Fred Dibley said "I've been a puppeteer all my life. I suppose this must be necessary, but it's very hard for me to adapt to this new style of puppetry. I don't touch my puppets any longer. These new anima ...wotsit.... fellas are completely driven by a laptop using a pre recorded voice track. I don't understand all this new fangled stuff. I have to get my young thirteen year old lad to help me. He knows more about it than I do!"

He added sadly "I don't even get to use my swazzle for Punch's voice any more! An' I really loved that swazzle!

Now it's gone too ......."
.
