Challenge 1074: Louis Vuitton's River
I went back to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris recently to see the David Hockney exhibition again, and was once more struck by Frank Gehry's dazzling architectural vision. At one point a full height glass wall gives onto this view of a shallow river that appears to run around the exterior of the building. Surely a waterway of this prominence needs a boat or two? Or is there a better way to make use of the facility? Apologies for the text reflection, there was no way to prevent it. High res is here.  |

And, interestingly, it would seem that, unless I am using it badly, Camera Raw reflection removal can't get rid of it. I'll have to use other means. A little bit tedious but I don't anticipate any difficulties. However, it shows that 'miracle' tools have limits in some cases. Thanks Steve for introducing me to this and Mariner for the extra details and movie. We love Ghery's architecture and have visited several of his buildings and stayed in one in Rioja. Ingrid and I will be in Paris for a few days next month as our son is competing in the World Judo Championships there. I've cheated a bit here and treated the water as if it were only a very shallow 'skin' above the tiles. Ben. Because you have done such a lovely job and I know how good you are, I am going to be really picky and point out that you should not be able to see the reflections of the wall through the reflection of the boat. The reflection might be transparent inasmuch as you could see the bottom of the waterway through it but it would completely mask any reflections behind it, in exactly the same way the boat itself masks anything behind it. Same applies to the girls. I find reflections really hard. They look as if they ought be so easy ......... just a bit of flip and ripple ........but, in truth, they can be very nasty creatures to create and deal with effectively. I had no end of difficulties with mine and if you look closely you will find all sorts of similar anomalies. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Ben, it was a comment. I wasn't suggesting you should re-do it! But since you have, I hope you will agree that it's a small change that makes a big difference. David, in an earlier draft I had masked under the boat but for some reason had delated the mask Once you mentioned it I really had to fix it for my own satisfaction. Rather than replacing the original I made a new entry as I thought our discussion may help someone else. It certainly makes a big difference, I really do appreciate your input, thanks. |

Having criticised another entry, I have now just spotted that I have a silly mistake in my own. I got so carried away with my main creation that I completely forgot to remove part of the reflection (above the far sunflower). It's my dreaded Photoshop tunnel vision again. I am not going back in to do it ......... REALLY? ........ This was a classic case of biting off more than I could chew. A huge amount of work went into this, but I haven't really pulled it off and it looks clearly 'shopped'. David It’s a 3D model. I changed the yellow texture for the Louis Vuitton using a straight jpg image. I didn’t map the texture with Body Paint software hence it ‘coming to a point’ on the duck’s chest; same with the tartan texture. _________________ Whatever you do in life do it with the enthusiasm of a 4-year old in a Batman suit. |
