Challenge 1081: The mosquito net
Browsing around the Chinese website AliExpress the other day I came upon this curious accessory for the midge-averse fisherman. I can't really imagine anyone cocooning themselves in one of these. But what really disturbed me was the way they had tried to give the impression of how it would look with an occupant:
A dodgy Photoshop job, for sure. But can you do any better? And where would you locate this obscure piscatorial accessory? High res is here. |

Steve, I can only assume that you were doing research for your Gadgets & Gizmos podcast, looking at sites like Alli Express & Temu? ![]() |

Not quite sure what to do with this rather unglamorous challenge. So as good (and boring) a place to start as any would seem to be to make a more convincing job of their own photograph. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1081: The mosquito net
IF YOU REALLY NEED THIS, THE DIFFICULTY IS THAT, AT SOME POINT, YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO LEAVE IT! This really rather dull image was nonetheless a fairly serious headache to produce. Please Mr. Caplin can we refrain from any need to extract and composite mosquito netting for a little while to come?

I have a feeling that mosquitos are not going to be this guy's biggest problem...

I couldn’t help but notice that this poor chap was suffering from a bad case of AI Finger, so I thought I would help by surgically removing it. ![]() |

Ant! That's a real James Fridman solution.
I have to confess I missed it entirely. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

http://vimeo.com/1139906523 That's very funny, Ant. After several (hit and miss) attempts using a variety of blending modes, I was quite satisfied with the end result. ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West: I'm melting! I'm melting! |

And so you should be. Very nicely done Anna. Multiple masks and blend modes were the route I took too. But you have done it much more cleverly. I really like the way you have given the far side netting a back lit glow and left the near side dark. Very subtle and totally convincing. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Excellent David. I am looking at adding a human and I can see how difficult it is. |

Re: Challenge 1081: The mosquito net
That's a really nicely put together image Frank.
Silly, but fun to do.
Damn! Never thought of that. Every so often I brush up with a tutorial to get my head round Blend If and think "That's really smart! I should remember that." ............................. and then I don't. If you want to get seriously head bending, you can do some very clever things using it on adjustment layers. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1081: The mosquito net
Following Frank's suggestion. The composite below is made from one single image of the woman with the netting already in place.
All three variations rely on the woman's body and the netting outside her body being masked on separate layers so to be able to keep her body opaque and the netting transparent. On the left using blend modes only. (What I used in my original submission.) In the middle using blend if only. On the right combination of both. My preference is for the combo, but all three are very adjustable. These are my personal best preference with each method. They could be very different according to taste. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
