Challenge 1087: Don't leave Harold hanging
I spent a weekend in Geneva shortly after Christmas, where – among other attractions – I visited the outstanding Chaplin's World museum, about an hour out of the city. In it are reproduced many scenes from his films, as well as a few of those of his contemporaries. I'm sure you'll recognise this iconic moment from Harold Lloyd's movie Safety Last. Can you either rescue him from his plight, or move him to a different clock? High res is here. |

Re: Challenge 1087: Don't leave Harold hanging
Lots of unexpected entries and lots of fun! I have gone for a ”How it was really done." entry. There were no special effects back then except for in camera effects. The clock and wall were a set, built on a roof top high above New York. The shots were made so as to exclude the rooftop but with the dizzying view of the city visible behind Harold. Apparently Harold Lloyd was very protective of his methods and did not allow photographs to be taken. I certainly could find nothing genuine. I have put this together from all sorts of mixed sources and reconstructed and built much of it myself. Sadly the weakest part is the awful plastic looking dummy from the museum exhibit with its cheap shiny terylene suit. But there was no other element of Steve's photo I could use and I like to try and at least pay lip service to the challenge image if I can. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David I agree with most of what you have written but my research tells me the background is near Broadway, LA, not New York. |

http://vimeo.com/1154203396?fl=pl&fe=sh By the time I got round to this challenge, all the clocks I knew had been used (which are wonderful, particularly Loyd's cuckoo clock). What started off as one idea ended up a mish mash of calamities for Hanger on Harold. ![]() _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Re: Challenge 1087: Don't leave Harold hanging
Well, wasn't this one difficult! I couldn't use any of that dreadful set piece dummy except his shoes, sorry Steve, so I dug out the original photo and went on a restoration binge. I tried to colour it, but couldn't get it to look natural. Here it is then, with all its faults.
