Challenge 1089: Weigh it up
One of the more curious sights in the museum in Geneva where I went in December was this giant scale. Presumably the weights hung on the hooks, and whatever you wanted to weigh was placed on the scale.

But what could you weigh with a scale this big?

High res is here.

The load tray is so close to the fulcrum it must have been able to weigh very large amounts with very modest weights.

It's been a very long and tedious haul but I am up and running again with what feels like a brand new machine (which in a sense it is) everything fast and solid. Fingers crossed.

Welcome back David!

Google AI saiys:
This is an antique steelyard balance, also known as a Roman balance. It is a type of straight-beam scale that uses a sliding counterweight along a longer, marked arm to measure the weight of an object suspended from a shorter arm.

A chance to feature my home town. Bath, Roman Aquae Sulis wasn’t just Roman by name. It was a fully functioning civic and religious centre, anchored by two things the Romans cared deeply about: water and order. Founded in the 1st century AD, soon after the conquest. Famous for its hot springs, sacred to Sulis Minerva. Home to baths, temples, workshops, storehouses, and administrators

Beautiful image, Ben.
I'm the other side of the spectrum with "Measure your metal." I know what you'll all be singing later on...lol.

Beautiful work Ben and Dennis, set the bar high. That sent me off in a different direction.

Re: Challenge 1089: Weigh it up
The village has recently received complaints from the WI (Witches Institute) regarding the fairness of the traditional ducking stool method for witch trials. The principal concern centres around the logic of the test: if the accused drowns, they are declared innocent, whereas survival marks them as a witch, resulting in execution by burning at the stake.

In response to these concerns, the villages are now piloting a new approach, referred to as the MK2 version, titled “Witches in the Balance”. This invention aims to address the issues raised and offer a more balanced process for those accused; suspects will only be accused if they tip the balance.

Some nice work so far.
Frank if I may make a couple of comments? The first is that that bucket is waaaayyyy too small to contain all the s... from this toddler. The other comment is 'Why is the prison door open?' Surely it should be welded shut?

Based on the idea from Pythons Holy Grail film where false logic leads the crowd to compare the weight of a duck to a witch. I'm not going to attempt to explain it, but it's available if you wish to do so. There were no usable images from the film.

Ant - apologies the witch idea was already in train when I saw yours.

Not a problem Nick, the same has happed to me many times. I think your Witch would fare much better than mine on my Witch evaluation system.

The venerable Sir Loyd has fallen upon hard times.

A man of many years experience in the lists he sought to boost his ailing finances by wagering heavily on a joust with Sir Stephen, of the house Caplin. Sadly, no longer in his prime, he was bested by the younger Sir Stephen. A man of unimpeachable propriety, he was obliged to pay the lost wager.

Sir Stephen, himself a noble gentlemen, respected Sir Loyd and would have devoutly preferred to allow the debt to be annulled. Sadly, by the demanding courtly standards of the day, this would have been viewed as charity and thus so mortifyingly damaging to Sir Loyd's self respect that Sir Loyd was left with no other option but to sell his armour to scrap dealers to raise the necessary funding.

(For those of you interested in such things Sir Loyd is wearing a “gamberson”, a quilted protective suit commonly worn under armour.)

I spent far too long on this, but, after a long week of tedious restoration, having my machine back fast and solid is such a treat that it was a real joy to do.
