Challenge 1092: Cheerful helmets
I saw these helmets in the museum in Geneva at Christmas, and was struck by how cheerful the faces seemed to be. Obviously a fight between two people wearing this protective gear would be bound to be good natured. Or would it?

High res is here.

The helmet on the right reminded me of C3PO so I just couldn't help myself..."A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."

Thanks Anna. I'm not sure about the colour saturation, the turtles poster seem to be that way but I wonder if its a bit hi.

Loved your animation.

Wow!! you are all really buzzing this week!. I am not going to even begin to single out any one in particular.

Who would have thought such a simple challenge would bring such a variety of good entries?

OOOOOOH! TELL YOU WHAT ………….. YOU RESCUE YOURS, I’LL RESCUE MINE!

On a routine round of virgin rescue and dragon slaying, two members of L’ordre Noble des Chevalier’s de Génève, Sir Hétéraux and Sir Gaie, make a surprising discovery!

My apologies for the very questionable taste and sensitivity of this submission but something about the right hand helmet struck me as so camp that I simply couldn’t resist it!

Re: Challenge 1092: Cheerful helmets
First to don the helmet this week was Ben Boardman, with a splendid scene featuring a British jockey – is she about to take up jousting? Outstanding lighting and positioning of the helmets, an excellent image. Perhaps a touch more shading inside the eye holes on the right, but that’s really nitpicking. A very cute Ninja Turtles entry, but I like the steampunk teapot best of all. Wonderful.

I enjoyed Ant Snell’s samurai Ken Do session, with its colourful tickling sticks. For those who don’t know, Ken Dodd was… oh, I can’t think where to start. Look him up.

Outstanding work from dwindt, with the now gold helmet fitting C3PO perfectly. I like how the rays from R2D2’s ‘head’ go over the top of his oversized helmet. Very good stuff indeed. A hilarious octopus entry – beautifully composed, and a great gag. The octopus on the right is clearly made in Photoshop, but did you 3D model the one on the left? Bring the sun rays in front of them and it will be perfect.

I like tooquilos's helmet-wearing Bugs Bunny on the moon, but who’s that wielding the gun? It certainly isn’t Elmer Fudd. An interesting 3D effect in the animated version, and I like the brief glimpse of what looks like an antique shop at the beginning. Still don’t know why they’re on the moon!

An impressive warrior from lwc, in his rusting and blood-spattered armour. Love the eyes. And that clockwork castle behind him looks worth investigating further. The Sumo entry is very entertaining, particularly the way the hand digs into the eye socket. Perhaps the shoulder of the wrestler on the left should be in front of the helmet?

Now that DavidMac points it out, the right hand helmet is a little camp – but this ‘questionable’ entry has an almost 1970s level of camp. hI can’t imagine where you found the body for Sir Gaie. I like the lighting, but must point out that while the woman casts a shadow, the dragon doesn’t. Or maybe dragons don’t?

______

Great work this week. Still trying to work out what it was about these helmets that made Ben think teapot, Anna think Moon and Denis think octopus.

Yes, double Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist and amateur jockey Victoria Pendleton did take part in a jousting session in 2017.

Enjoyed the challenge. No idea why I came up with the teapot - maybe I shouldn't drink tea while doing a challenge.

I have to confess I had a lot of 'questioable' fun doing it!

I can’t imagine where you found the body for Sir Gaie

Finding gay men in leather armour and chains is not hard but it definitely involves switching off Safe Search and clearing history afterwards! My original search for “man in chains” got surprisingly few results but the moment I changed it to “naked man in chains” I was swamped with hundreds of them! I did do some puppet warp posing as well for Sir Gaie.

I like the lighting, but must point out that while the woman casts a shadow, the dragon doesn’t. Or maybe dragons don’t?

Here’s my theory. The dragon’s head is higher than she so his shadow would be higher or, in terms of our viewpoint, closer. If you look at her shadow, the head and shoulders start to disappear into a bigger shadow which is the shadow of the lower edge of the dragon’s head. I think this is correct and consistent.

However, if you want to get picky (which I don’t) that places the head and shoulders of the real girl in his shadow as well, which I didn’t want because the backlight on her is very effective. So I chose to use the get out card of ‘artistic licence’.

This was a really surprising challenge from everyone. Seems we all had fun!

Re: Challenge 1092: Cheerful helmets
On re-examination, the light source is high. There should be more dragon shadow visible. In fact I suspect it would engulf hers.

That would make the problem of obscuring the backlight on her even more severe.

Even though its beginning to look a bit frayed at the edges, I think I have to stick with 'artistic licence'.

Re: Challenge 1092: Cheerful helmets
Thank you, Steve. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip down Star war's memory lane.
The octopus image started with an ai image of both octopuses prompted separately...but no matter how I prompt my request, I couldn't get an image that suited my idea, so, yes and always...trusty Photoshop to the rescue. The ai die hards should really give the method a try. The promising thing is that you just have to make sense of the sometimes, quite distorted results. The beauty is that those images contain the same material, light, colour toning etc. Bring it together with Photoshop and it's really rewarding.
If it's of help, I use a site called (https://www.seaart.ai/). You get daily free credits, and it can produce some useful images. I don't play with all the bells and whistles; I just use text to image to get as close to what I want as possible...if not, 3D. Failing that, if ever, I search the web for what I can find. Last resort but I do often, I paint it.
